The finale episode of Dune: Prophecy aired on December 22, 2024, marks the conclusion of the six episodic series. But the finale has left the viewers with more questions than answers. In the previous episode, we get to know that Desmond Hart belongs to both Houses as he is the son of Tula Harkonnen and Orry Atreides. The episode also suggested that his crusade for the sisterhood might be personal and has to do with his mother who abandoned him.
But there is more to it. The origin of Desmond's power stems from his past. Episode 6 of Dune: Prophecy comes with a new revelation about Desmond Hart being genetically manipulated by someone using the powers of Thinking Machines. Who put a thinking Machine inside Desmond Hart and what does it mean? It was discovered by Valya that a 'hooded figure' implants the thinking machine inside Desmond.
What we know about Thinking Machines and Desmond's Past so far, Dune: Prophecy
In Episode 3, Tula takes Lila's life in her hands. Eventually, she dies during The Agony Ritual. Episode 4 reveals that Lila was resurrected through the Thinking Machine, Anirul. In episode 5 Desmond rises to power and the truth about his origin is revealed. In episode 6 Tula finds out that Desmond is her son.
Episode 6 sets in with Valya planning to dethrone Javicco Corrino and replace him with her daughter. While Tula discusses her nightmare with Nazir who concludes that it's the result of a virus that acts by heightening the fears and these fears eat up the mind. Nazir eventually dies while creating the antidote for the virus.
Who implants the thinking Machine inside Desmond Hart in Dune: Prophecy and what does it mean?
Valya visions Desmond Hart and discovers a hooded figure using a Thinking Machine to implant a smaller Thinking Machine in his eyes. This makes him a carrier of the virus and an idol with deadly powers. This is depicted when Tula realizes that Desmond's power to burn people alive stems from this virus that feeds on fear. When Valya tries to fight it Tula reveals that it's not human but a machine and can't be defeated by force.
Valya sees a silhouette figure in her vision, therefore keeping the identity unrevealed but it is indeed someone who is aware of Desmond's potential and is determined to destroy Sisterhood. Therefore Desmond was programmed to rise to power by Thinking Machines.
This being the chronology of the events in Dune: Prophecy, the finale doesn't exactly reveal who put the thinking machine inside Desmond Hart, but it suggests that the mystery has to do something with Desmond's past.
However, the fact that Desmond's power stems from a Thinking Machine, it can be expected that he is not the only one with the power. Whoever turned Desmond into a weapon of biological warfare might do the same to someone else or already have.
Therefore, The thinking Machine twist is meant to give out answers to Desmond's unbelievable supernatural powers. He is not just a mix of the Harkennon and Atreids but also someone powered by a machine which makes him undefeatable in Dune: Prophecy.
