Dune: Prophecy was one of the most-anticipated shows of the year 2024. Owing to the success of the Dune film franchise, there were high expectations from the series. Set 10,000 years before the events of the film, the sci-fi drama follows two sisters, Valya and Tula.

As the two try to establish and empower the Bene Gesserit, they face several challenges and threats. The show aired six episodes on HBO between November 17 and December 22, 2024, and received mixed reviews.

However, the reviews could not affect Dune: Prophecy’s streaming charts performance. The series has received massive viewership, becoming one of the most-watched shows on Max in 2024.

Dune: Prophecy: streaming charts performance and viewership numbers

Dune: Prophecy consistently garnered good viewership numbers on Max. The show amassed 1.2 million views upon its premiere on November 17, 2024. By the next day, the number had reached 2.1 million.

This made the show the third major hit of 2024 for Max after House of the Dragon and The Penguin. In the following week, Dune: Prophecy topped the streaming charts in the US.

As per Samba TV, a company that offers data on viewership analytics, it was the most-watched show on streaming during the week of November 25 to December 1, 2024.

The series reached the maximum number of households, leaving behind shows like Netflix’s Our Little Secret, Paramount+’s Lioness, and Prime Video’s Cross. Hence, the show proved to be a successful series for Max, which started off as a prequel to the film series but was able to carve its own niche among the audience.

Dune: Prophecy has received mixed reviews

Dune: Prophecy has gotten mixed reviews, but has received praise due to its stunning visuals and world-building. Critics have praised how the show brings the Dune universe to life with incredible costumes and detailed sets that make it feel authentic.

Many reviewers have lauded the show for basing the story around strong women, giving it a fresh perspective that feels different from other fantasy series. Some reviewers also like how the series explores lesser-known parts of the Dune universe.

Even though the plot can feel slow at times, its intriguing and mysterious narrative can hold the audience’s attention. However, some people have found the pacing of the show extremely slow and do not like the complicated storyline.

Hence, the series may not be perfect, but its stunning visuals and atmosphere, and unique take on the Dune universe, make it worth watching.

The series currently has a decent IMDb rating of 7.3, based on 29 thousand votes. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show has a 70% freshness rating as per critical reviews and a 66% popcornmeter rating as per the audience’s reactions.
