Dune: Prophecy aired its second episode on HBO on November 24, 2024. The sci-fi drama takes place 10,000 years before the events of the film Dune (2021) and follows the establishment of the Sisterhood and the rise of the Bene Gesserit.
The premiere episode set up the world of the series and introduced the audience to some intriguing characters. The second episode, Two Wolves, continues the drama and mystery.
The new episode delves deeper into the struggles for power in the Imperium and introduces some shocking twists as dangerous alliances are formed and cryptic prophecies are revealed. Meanwhile, it also explores the mysterious powers of Desmond Hart.
Desmond Hart’s powers in Dune: Prophecy
Desmond Hart gets to be the focus in Dune: Prophecy in episode 2, where he showcases surprising powers that defy explanation. After surviving an attack by a massive sandworm on Arrakis, Hart develops abilities that no one can comprehend.
He claims responsibility for the deaths of Kasha and Pruwet, even though they were half a galaxy apart, and seems able to kill from extraordinary distances. Apart from that, Hart can also resist the ‘Voice,’ a technique used by Valya to control people’s actions, something no one else has been able to do.
Valya tries to manipulate Hart into cutting his own throat using the Voice, but he is able to oppose her power. He then openly declares his mission to destroy the Sisterhood, saying they are manipulating the Imperium and its rulers for their own benefit.
His claims about the Sisterhood’s corruption make others rethink their views, including Emperor Javicco's. Hart’s power is tied to something greater, possibly the spice or his encounter with the sandworm. He might even be the ‘weapon born of war’ that Raquella’s prophecy mentions.
Lila dies during the Agony ritual in Dune: Prophecy
After the deaths of Reverend Mother Kasha and Pruwet Richese, Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen orders Sister Lila, a descendant of the Sisterhood’s founder, to undergo a dangerous ritual called ‘the Agony.’
The test is supposed to unlock genetic memories by forcing the person to survive a deadly poison. Valya hopes Lila will contact Raquella’s spirit to learn more about the prophecy called the Reckoning.
During the ritual, Lila faces visions of her ancestors in a terrifying spiritual realm. Raquella appears in the visions briefly and tells her, “The key to the Reckoning is one born twice, once in blood, once in spice.”
However, Lila is tricked by her vengeful grandmother, Dorotea, who possesses her spirit. Dorotea reveals that Valya and her sister lied about Lila’s mother and stole her future.
Lila dies during the ritual, leaving her fellow acolytes in shock and shaking their faith in the Sisterhood. Lila’s death causes tension within the group, especially among her friends, who start questioning Valya’s leadership and motives.
Valya’s influence dwindles at the court
At the royal palace, Emperor Javicco Corrino struggles to maintain control as the rebellion gains momentum. His son, Keiran Atreides, secretly works with rebels and plans to overthrow the Empire.
Meanwhile, Valya arrives at court in Dune: Prophecy episode 2 and tries to regain her influence. However, she faces opposition from both Desmond Hart and the emperor. Hart’s position grows stronger when he proves his loyalty to Javicco by burning Duke Richese alive during an audience.
The brutal act proves that Hart is not just a killer but someone who can intimidate the Emperor’s enemies. However, Hart’s rise also threatens Valya. When she confronts him, he tells her that her time is over, and her influence is meaningless.
When Hart is able to resist her Voice effortlessly, it leaves her shaken and establishes him as a figure who could change the future of the Imperium.
