After six thrilling episodes, Dune: Prophecy season 1 aired its finale on HBO on December 22, 2024. The sci-fi series, based on Frank Herbert's Dune Universe, starts with the story of sisters Valya Harkonnen and Tula Harkonnen, who establish the Sisterhood.

As the show progresses, Valya and Tula face various threats and challenges that threaten the rise of the Sisterhood. The twists and turns continue in the season finale as some shocking secrets about the sisters’ past come out.

However, there are still several plot points that were left unresolved in the show. Fortunately, HBO has already renewed the series for a second season. Here are 7 crucial questions that must be addressed in Dune: Prophecy season 2.

7 crucial questions that must be addressed in Dune: Prophecy season 2

1) Who will rule the Imperium?

Emperor Javicco Corrino died in the season 1 finale, which left the Imperium in chaos. His wife, Empress Natalya, now wants to rise to power, but it would not be easy for her. There are doubts about whether she even has the right to rule.

Meanwhile, Constantine Corrino, Javicco’s illegitimate son, might try to claim the throne himself. At the same time, the Sisterhood is backing Ynez for the throne, which further complicates the matter. Dune: Prophecy season 2 will likely depict a fierce fight for leadership and eventually reveal who sits on the throne.

2) Who turned Desmond Hart into a weapon?

One of the most intriguing mysteries in Dune: Prophecy is who turned Desmond Hart into a dangerous, half-human, half-machine weapon. He has been infected with nanotechnology which made him a living virus.

In the first season, Valya’s vision saw a mysterious figure working with a thinking machine to alter Desmond. But the show did not reveal who this person was. The second season needs to delve into Desmond’s past and disclose the identity and the motive of the person who altered him.

3) What secrets lie in Arrakis?

Arrakis has always been at the center of the Dune universe because of its spice production. Valya, Ynez, and Keiran Atreides are now headed to the desert planet, which hints that it will have an important role to play in Dune: Prophecy season 2.

Arrakis might hold clues about Desmond’s mysterious transformation, and could also serve as a place for Valya to confront her enemies. The planet's long history as a battleground of power signals it might test Ynez's leadership and Keiran's loyalties.

4) How will the Sisterhood’s dispute be resolved?

The Sisterhood has been fractured by Valya’s ruthlessness, particularly after the revelation that she and Tula murdered dissenting members. The surviving acolytes are now divided, with many questioning Valya’s leadership. Dorotea, who exposed Valya’s crimes, might lead a group of rebels against her.

The second season needs to address whether the Sisterhood will find a way to come back together, or will the split destroy them. It will also need to explore if outside sections like Landsraad take advantage of the dispute.

5) Can Desmond be cured?

Desmond’s infection is more than just a personal problem as it is a dangerous weapon. In season 1, Tula discovered that Valya’s blood might hold the cure for Desmond’s infection.

Hence, Valya is facing the tough choice of whether she should help Desmond, who is her family, or use the virus as a weapon for her own plans. Tula is also furious at Valya for how her son, Desmond was used, which could lead to a showdown between them and change the course of the story.

6) Will Constantine Corrino seek revenge?

Constantine has mostly stayed in the background so far, but his mother Francesca’s murder might push him to become a powerful figure in the story. With a claim to the throne and control over the Imperial fleet, he can easily challenge Natalya’s rule.

However, his close connections to both Francesca and Ynez make things tricky. Dune: Prophecy season 2 needs to answer if he will seek revenge for Francesca, help Ynez take power, or choose some other path that could change the balance of power in the Imperium.

7) What Is Valya’s ultimate plan?

Valya Harkonnen is certainly a master manipulator, but her real goals still remain unclear in the show. In season 1, she is seen predicting outcomes, forming alliances, and eliminating her enemies, which makes it seem like she is working on a grand plan.

Dune: Prophecy season 2 needs to reveal if Valya is really vouching for peace through the Sisterhood’s power, or if she is just using it as an excuse to get what she wants. The secrets of her past crimes and her unstable relationships with her allies may pose a challenge to her in the next season.
