Dope Thief is an adaptation of Dennis Tafoya’s eponymous novel, which came out in 2009. It tells the story of two childhood friends from Philadelphia: Raymond "Ray" Driscoll and Manny Carvalho, who pretend to be DEA agents to trick drug dealers and seek money from them.
However, they accidentally stumble upon a massive drug ring that changes the course of their lives. Meanwhile, a real DEA agent on an undercover mission also encounters them, leading the agency to investigate Ray and Manny. The official logline for the show reads:
“The series follows long-time Philly friends and delinquents who pose as DEA agents to rob an unknown house in the countryside, only to have their small-time grift become a life-and-death enterprise, as they unwittingly reveal and unravel the biggest hidden narcotics corridor on the Eastern Seaboard.”
