The Night Agent season 2 continues the journey of intelligence agent Peter Sutherland, who finds himself in the middle of another high-stakes mission. While some dangerous men are planning to unleash a chemical weapon on New York City, the agent has to put his life at risk to save innocent people.
Meanwhile, there is a larger conspiracy going on that involves war criminals, terrorists, and even the government. In The Night Agent season 2 finale, a flashback scene is featured which showcases how Jacob Monroe, the illegal intelligence broker, met Governor Hagan, the future president some eight years before the show’s events.
The sequence not only reveals the collusion between the two but also sets up a major arc for The Night Agent season 3. The flashback establishes Monroe as a formidable villain who wants to control the government, which could pose a threat to Peter in the next installment.
How The Night Agent Season 2 finale flashback sequence sets up Season 3
The flashback shows a confidential meeting between Jacob Monroe and Governor Hagan, who is going to run for president. Monroe has been secretly helping Hagan rise to power and become the perfect candidate for the White House. However, he is not doing this out of kindness.
Instead, he wants to have influence over the government, gain access to classified information, and sell it to the highest bidder. Monroe has already caused enough trouble in the second season by catalyzing the KX attack and is expected to be an even bigger threat in The Night Agent season 3.
As seen in The Night Agent season 2, Monroe is a ruthless intelligence broker who does not care about who gets hurt as long as it brings him profits. He helps war criminal Viktor Bala unleash chemical weapons.
The flashback reveals that Monroe has been working behind the scenes to make sure Hagan wins the election by using secret information to blackmail other candidates.
Hagan’s win is part of Monroe’s long-term plan to control the White House and get his hands on classified documents. But the scene also depicts that Hagan is not fully under Monroe’s control. Although Monroe has helped him, Hagan does not want to be answerable to the broker.
This sets up a conflict between the two characters in The Night Agent season 3. While Monroe is hungry for power, Hagan has become resistant toward him, which hints their relationship might change significantly in the future.
Series creator Shawn Ryan also talked about how Monroe and Hagan are going to be the prominent villains in the upcoming season in his official statement to Netflix's Tudum. Ryan said:
“One of the things that season 3 will question is whether Monroe is the big bad. Is Hagan the big bad? Are the two of them as a combo the big bad? But certainly, Monroe is the loose thread of season 2. That’s going to have to be dealt with in some way in Season 3.”
How the scene affects Peter’s future in The Night Agent
The events of The Night Agent Season 2 are going to have serious consequences for Peter. The agent has stolen an important file from the UN for Monroe and unknowingly helped him rig the election for Hagan.
The flashback scene hints at problems for Peter and his boss, Catherine. Catherine wants Peter to infiltrate Monroe’s network and take it down, but the agent is already connected to the broker. He will now have to stay on Monroe’s good side while working carefully to bring out his secrets.
In the next season, Peter not only has to balance his mission to expose Monroe’s corruption, but also redeem himself for the mistake he committed in The Night Agent season 2.
