Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale will finally return for its sixth and final season on April 8, 2025, which will see befitting conclusions for every character.
Max Minghella's Nick Blaine, June Osborne's mysterious lover, has a complicated character in the show. He appears to be helping June escape the Gilead, but later, he is revealed to be a man working on the inside.
The earlier seasons saw him being promoted to the Commander, the legal owner of Handmaids, who can practice ritualized r*pe with them. However, Nick does not believe in this barbaric Gileadean practice.
While Nick does not die in The Handmaid's Tale yet, his position in the Season 5 finale suggests that he will meet a tragic end in the series finale.
More on Nick's character in The Handmaid's Tale in our story.
What happened to Nick in The Handmaid's Tale Season 5 finale?
However, after June finally escapes to Canada in Season 4, Nick proves his loyalty as he promises to reunite June with her daughter Hannah and help her escape Gilead. While Nick abhors the government and ideology he works for, he knows that this is the only way to survive and stay alive and the only way he has a chance at saving Hannah.
In Season 5, Gilead launches many attacks on June as punishment for her escape. While June finally earns her freedom, she longs to be reunited with her daughter, who is still stuck in Gilead. It looks like the fate June does not want for her is drawing near.
In the Season 5 finale, as Nick makes efforts to save Hannah, he agrees to be an American spy and expose Gilead's dirty secrets. However, his new position is immediately threatened, as seen in the final moments of Episode 5.
After Nick punches Commander Lawrence on his wedding day and tries to expose Gilead's secret, he is put in a detention center. His wife, Rose, visits him in the center and breaks all ties with him because he still has feelings for June.
The Handmaid's Tale might be setting a tragic ending for Nick in the series finale
Since The Handmaid's Tale will conclude with a sixth and final season, Nick's character arc is bound to reach its conclusion, which might be tragic. Given his circumstances, Nick was termed Gilead's traitor in the Season 5 finale, while Lawrence finally learned that Nick's loyalties do not lie with his country.
In addition, even if Nick manages to turn his situation around, he has nothing left in Gilead except for his daughter. The love of his life, June, is finally free and with her husband, and Nick would not want to pin her down with him, as he expresses in Season 5.
The Season 6 finale could see Nick finally freeing Hannah and reuniting her with June—his last act of love for the woman he wholeheartedly loves. But the chances of his own survival seem highly unlikely.
