Hulu's new comedy series Mid-Century Modern premiered on March 28, 2025. Created by the Will & Grace duo, Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, the series delves into the life of three middle-aged gay best friends who move into one of their friend's mother's luxurious mansion in Palm Springs following an unexpected loss.
The show begins at a funeral, where we meet the gay besties for the first time. Viewers see Bunny Schneiderman, played by Nathan Lane, and Vogue journalist Arthur Broussard (Nathan Lee Graham) mourning the loss of their friend George. Meanwhile, their friend Jerry Frank (Matt Boomer) arrives at the funeral home in his flight attendant uniform, looking quite exhausted.
Later, they visit Bunny's sprawling Palm Springs mansion which he shares with his mother Sybil, played by the late Linda Lavin. After a lot of confusion, group discussions, and arguments, the three decide to stay together in the mansion and thus live the rest of their lives with their "chosen family."
Over the next ten episodes, the three besties navigate various challenges, adjusting to their new lives, rekindling past romances, and finally learning to confront various challenges. However, in Episode 9, titled "Here's To You," Sybil's sudden death shakes the entire scenario, leading to some emotional scenes. Due to the unfortunate death of Linda Lavin in December 2024, the writers had to write off her character for the last two episodes.
Sybil's sudden death led to a chaotic, fun fight between the three best friends who would occupy her room, and the return of Bunny's sister Mindy teases a potential plot for Mid-Century Modern Season 2.
Hulu's original sitcom has already managed to garner 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and an average of 67% on Metacritic. Even though Hulu has still not renewed Mid-Century Modern for Season 2, it can be expected that, after reviewing the ratings and viewership, Hulu might announce a new season.
Mid-Century Modern has also managed to retain a number one position out of the Top 15 on Hulu in its debut weekend. Moreover, the low production cost of such comedy-drama is a brownie point that might prompt Hulu for a new season.
How does Mid-Century Modern Season 1 ending set up for a potential season?
Even though Mid-Century Modern Season 1 did not leave any cliffhanging situations, sitcoms such as these can run for several seasons with fresh comedic storylines.
Mid-Century Modern Episode 9 featured the tragic death of Bunny's mother, Sybil. The entire episode was a tribute to the late actor Linda Lavin, who played Sybil. Soon after Sybil's death, a hilarious fight between Arthur, Jerry, and Bunny broke out because they couldn't decide who would be getting Sybil's room. Even though they knew that it might be occupied by Bunny's sister, Mindy, played by Pamela Adlon. Nonetheless, the three shared a fun moment in the room.
Even though the season ended on a fun note, there are several plots that the writers could explore with such well-balanced characters. Apart from that, the viewers would also like to see some new cast members in the upcoming season (if any).
In an interview with Deadline, creator Max Mutchnick has teased some bits about Mid-Century Modern's potential Season 2. When asked about a crossover with Will & Grace, he said,
"I don't think we are gonna do that. But that doesn't mean fans won't see familiar faces in future seasons."
