Mark Harmon seems to be taking up more roles for NCIS: Origins than he did in NCIS. In the new show, he serves as an executive producer and also appeared in the premiere as he is also the narrator of the show.

NCIS: Origins revealed what Gibbs was doing back in Alaska as he was seen writing a story by the fireside that he has never told anyone about. This spin-off of the NCIS franchise sees Austin Stowell playing the role of young Gibbs.

While Harmon was meant to have only a minimal role in NCIS: Origins, and serve as the narrator, he also makes a physical appearance under mysterious circumstances as he narrates the show.

A number of young versions of the NCIS characters feature in the spin off, including Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid) and Vera Strickland (Diany Rodriguez). It is interesting to note that Harmon would be the only original cast member who would reappear in NCIS: Origins.

His return is good news to the fans because his character’s exit in NCIS Season 19 had meant Harmon’s complete departure from the show. Let us now explore in detail what Harmon would exactly be doing in NCIS: Origins.

What is Mark Harmon's role in NCIS: Origins?

The entire scope of Mark Harmon’s role in NCIS: Origins is still under mystery. Besides his role as a narrator who gives the viewers an insight into the grieving mind of Young Gibbs, there are limited shots of him sitting by a campfire.

Upon a closer look at those shots, it's revealed that Gibbs is still in Alaska. It was revealed in NCIS Season 19 that Gibbs had retired in Naktok Bay, Alaska following his exit from the show and as is shown in these shots, it seems that he never left.

Gibbs is also shown to be writing in his journal, a habit that was not previously mentioned in NCIS. This journaling is significant as it seems that through this habit, Gibbs is revisiting the painful memories of the early 90s.

It is possible that continual stay in Alaska has made Gibbs emotionally vulnerable to the point where he is okay with the idea of revisiting his past. Though the NCIS: Origins premiere did not clear the mysteries behind the old Gibbs, it is evident that Gibbs is an important part of this spin off.

What does Mark Harmon say about his involvement in NCIS: Origins?

Despite his exit from NCIS, Harmon always cared about the show a little too much. Therefore, when his son came up with a prequel idea to him, the duo went to showrunners Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North to make it happen.

Further speaking on NCIS: Origins that debuted on October 14, 2024, Harmon said,

“Is there a story to tell? Definitely. Is it going to be different than people know? Definitely. I couldn’t be more thrilled with Gina and David, who they represent and their history with his show.”

He added,

“They were the best I ever worked with on that show, and I love what they’ve done and what they’ve worked very hard at and tried to push toward. My job is to try to protect that.”

While Harmon’s son, Sean Harmon had once played the role of young Gibbs in seven episodes of NCIS, the spin off would see Austin Stowell as the young Gibbs and Sean serving as an executive producer of the show.

NCIS: Origins can be streamed on Paramount+.
