Guy Ritchie's MobLand follows the two crime families, the Harrigans and the Stevensons, and the battle that ensues between them after Eddie Harrigan, Conrad Harrigan's grandson, murders Tommy Stevenson, Richie Stevenson's son.
As the tension between the two families rises, Harry Da Souza, who works as a fixer for the Harrigans, finds himself in an increasingly perilous situation as his own family begins to receive threats in the process.
Amid all this, one character that constantly seems to fuel the fire of this already violent battle is Maeve Harrigan, Conrad's wife and Eddie's grandmother. While Conrad is undoubtedly the head of the Harrigan empire, it is Maeve who is shown to be pulling the strings from behind the scenes and majorly influencing Conrad's decisions, even when it comes to murdering people.
With the already aired four episodes, Maeve's presence is becoming increasingly sinister, and it would not be surprising if the fans start to wonder whether she actually wants the best for Conrad, or if she has something of her own going on that she wants to fulfill through Eddie.
Maeve might have her own ambitions to fulfil in MobLand
The first time Maeve's extreme influence on Conrad became evident was when she called the shots regarding the killing of Richie Stevenson. Despite Richie being within shooting distance, Maeve asked Conrad to call it off, stating it was only natural for him to be present when Richie was killed.
Next, Maeve compelled Conrad to kill Archie, his longtime friend and business partner, simply because she suspected he was being disloyal to Conrad. It was clear that Conrad hesitated to pull the trigger and displayed visible distress after murdering Archie. Maeve's reasoning for killing Archie was also somewhat weak, and now that the location of Archie's body has been revealed to the police, it is evident that there is a mole, likely from within the Harrigan family.
However, Maeve seems unfazed by the consequences of her actions. While everyone in her family condemns Eddie for killing Tommy, which would inevitably lead to a war, Maeve holds an entirely opposite view. She tells Eddie that he has done the right thing and that he is a true Harrigan. Additionally, she remarks that his grandfather has lost his edge, and they need someone reckless and brutal like Eddie to ensure the Harrigans do not lose their grip. This demonstrates Maeve's own hunger for power and her willingness to manipulate a not very bright Eddie for her personal gain.
Conrad and Maeve's marriage has not been an easy ride in MobLand
While Conrad and Maeve have been depicted as a power couple where Conrad cannot ignore what Maeve tells him, her actions are becoming increasingly questionable. She has been with Conrad since she was 16, as she was pregnant with their first child at that age. However, despite all these years together, Conrad had multiple affairs, one of which produced a daughter, Seraphina, whom Maeve understandably hates.
Moreover, Conrad also slept with Bella Harrigan, and when Maeve learned about it, she was introduced to Kevin Harrigan, their son, who eventually married Bella. Being married to a man like Conrad has certainly hurt Maeve multiple times because of his lifestyle, and if she wants to manipulate him to her own ends, that will not be a shocking move.
In the latest episode, Maeve attempted to plant seeds of suspicion about Harry in Conrad's mind, something he sternly disagreed with. However, Maeve held her ground and unnecessarily tried to create tension between Harry and Conrad when the former had been nothing but loyal to the Harrigans, even at the expense of his own family.
Such dubious moves on Maeve's part hint at some underlying grudge within her, which she might be expressing by provoking Conrad to hurt people he not only trusts but also cares about. If she successfully manipulates Conrad into doing her bidding and eventually places Eddie on the king's throne, she would be the one running the empire, and who can tell if that's not her ambition after all?
MobLand can be streamed on Paramount+ with new episodes coming out every Sunday.
