Starz Outlander Season 7 had the best cameos by some old and new faces. While Roger and Buck McKenzie accidentally time-traveled to 1739, they were shocked to encounter Geillis Duncan and Dougal McKenzie there. Lotte Verbeek and Graham McTavish, who played their respective characters in Season 1, returned for a cameo in Season 7.
Fans were also surprised to see another familiar face, not from the Starz show but from another historical drama. Masterpiece on PBS's historical drama All Creatures Great and Small star Nicholas Ralph debuted in Outlander Season 7 as Jerry McKenzie, Roger's father.
Roger accidentally met his father in Season 7 Episode 13 while looking for his son Jemmy. As mentioned before, Jerry was a pilot in World War II who was recruited for a special air mission in Europe. But unfortunately, the mission went haywire and after Jerry's plane crashed, he was assumed dead.
However, Roger discovered that his father was not dead, but had accidentally traveled back in time through the stones.
While Outlander Season 7 did not reveal whether he made it back, author Diana Gabaldon's novella showed that Jerry McKenzie returned to his own time but died shortly after, while trying to save young Roger.
More on Jerry McKenzie's fate in Outlander in our story.
Roger helped his father go back to his time in Outlander Season 7
Roger and Buck's adventure in the past to find Jemmy accidentally landed them in 1739. Although the period was incorrect, Roger was convinced that they had been sent here for a purpose. Soon, this purpose became apparent when Roger found his father, Jerry McKenzie's dog tags.
The dog tags not only proved that Roger's father was alive and did not die in the plane crash, but that he had traveled back in time. After much effort, Roger and Buck finally located Jerry, who was clad in a bomber jacket (which confirmed that he was in fact a time traveler). Jerry was barely surviving and hiding from the village folks as he had stolen their sheep.
While their reunion was emotional for Roger, it was limited as the villagers caught on to Jerry. Without revealing his identity or explaining their relationship, Roger gave his father a gemstone and asked him to travel through the stones to his time period.
Once Jerry was gone, Roger expected to be flooded with his father's memories, which would also prove that Jerry had made it to his time. However, he had only one vision where he was sitting with his father in the London Underground at a very young age.
Diana Gabaldon's Outlander short story witnessed a tragic fate for Jerry McKenzie
While Outlander Season 7 did not show what happened to Jerry after Roger sent him through the stones, Outlander's short story A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows tells the conclusion of Jerry's tale.
In addition, the short novella also revealed that Jerry McKenzie was recruited by none other than Captain Frank Randall for the mission that led him to accidentally time travel.
According to the novella, Jerry makes it to his time, but some years have passed since his disappearance, and his flat has been destroyed in the German bombing during WWII.
However, Jerry finally finds his wife, Marjorie, and their young son, Roger, in the London Underground during an air raid. However, before Jerry could make his way to them, Marjorie was killed by a collapsing ceiling. She manages to push young Roger away, who falls into Jerry's hands.
Jerry's misfortunes did not end here, as during the commotion, he managed to save young Roger but fell backward onto the track to his death. Since he did not have his dog tags on him, nobody was able to identify his body and he was assumed to have died in the initial plane crash.
While Roger did not have the chance to catch up with his father in the novella, his vision in Outlander Season 7 suggests that he was able to spend some moments with Jerry before his death in the TV show. However, since Outlander Season 7 did not reveal Jerry's fate, one can only hope that the series' final season might give some answers.
