Daredevil: Born Again Season 1's finale was streamed on Disney+ on April 15, 2025. This episode also featured the series' first post-credit scene. In the closing moments, we learn that Fisk has gathered his opponents, including billionaires like Tony Dalton's Jack Duquesne, and confined them in a cage. Another Marvel vigilante that Fisk has successfully captured is Frank Castle.
However, the post-credit scene of this episode of Daredevil: Born Again reveals an exciting development. Frank Castle, rather than using aggression, engages in a friendly conversation with one of the guards, Anthony Petruccio. Frank convinces Anthony to shake hands with him, and afterward, Castle breaks the guard's arm, then the screen goes black. Yet, we can hear a cage being unlocked.
This suggests that Frank used the guard to escape. Therefore, the Daredevil: Born Again finale not only prepares for the upcoming second season but also sets the stage for The Punisher special, one of whose writers is none other than Jon Bernthal himself.
"Mayor Fisk becomes Mayor Kingpin, and Daredevil is unleashed as chaos takes over the city."
What happens in the Daredevil: Born Again finale?
The first season of Daredevil: Born Again concludes with Kingpin taking control of New York City. He finally implements what he has advocated since the first episode, officially prohibiting vigilantes, enforcing an 8 PM curfew, and establishing martial law. In the meantime, Matt Murdock/Daredevil has also assembled his own team to oppose Fisk and his task force.
Cherry, Karen Page, Angie Kim, and several honest police officers are part of this team. However, there is a possibility that The Man Without Fear may reach out to Jessica Jones, Iron Fist/Danny Rand, and Luke Cage in the second season as Fisk and his anti-vigilante militia tighten their hold on New York. In addition to the other Defenders, Jack Duquesne/Swordsman could also be a strong candidate.
If Castle managed to escape Fisk's captivity in the post-credit scene of "Straight to Hell" and helped the fellow captives, Tony Dalton's Duquesne could be at large, suggesting he might join Daredevil in his crusade. However, Castle may not be part of the team since he fundamentally disagrees with Daredevil's methods, as he still pulls his punches and does not kill.
So, the upcoming Disney+ Punisher special could be set in New York, which is still under Wilson Fisk's control.
Based on the Daredevil: Born Again post-credit scene, what is the solo Punisher series about?
Whether the other captives are free or not, we do know that Frank Castle may compel Fisk to be more stringent with his hostages in Season 2. Thus, the Punisher special, which currently lacks a release date, will likely focus on Frank Castle's efforts to take down Wilson Fisk and his anti-vigilante task force.
However, considering how the finale concluded, it seems the heroes might be unable to dismantle Fisk's rule until Season 2. Nonetheless, we have insights into what the special will entail, based on Jon Bernthal's comments to The Hollywood Reporter during the SXSW premiere of The Accountant 2:
“It’s going to be dark; Frank has no interest in breaking out the darkness. It’s not going to be easy. I don’t know if that’s the Netflix tone then that’s what it’s going to be. It will not be Punisher-lite, I promise you that.”
Both the Punisher special and Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 are expected to be released sometime in 2026.
