Doctor Odyssey is the latest medical procedural produced for ABC. The show brings an interesting twist to the hospital drama genre as the action in the series takes place on a cruise ship. Coming from the creative minds of Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken, the series premiered on ABC on September 26, 2024.
Doctor Odyssey tells the story of Dr Max Bankman, played by Joshua Jackson, who travels to the luxurious cruise ship Odyssey. Don Johnson, Phillipa Soo, and Sean Teale also join the story in important roles as Dr Bankman battles through life-and-death situations in the most dangerous ship environment.
The new medical series brings back memories of old medical dramas. What makes this series stand, however, is that it has all the suspense you would expect from a high-pressure maritime setting.

A quick recap of Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Episode 1
The first episode of Doctor Odyssey introduces us to the show's main characters. We see the Odyssey preparing for its maiden voyage, setting the scene for the rest of the medical drama. The pilot episode focuses on four main characters and their stories. Dr Max Bankman is the new head of the ship's medical team after a previous doctor was sacked by Captain Massey.
Dr Bankman is a humanitarian doctor who has worked with the Peace Corps and the United Nations. In the first episode, he makes easy friends with his staff, such as nurses Avery and Tristan. Avery and Dr Max are initially attracted to each other, but working on a ship with infectious diseases complicates things.
The medical team's first case is a passenger who has overdosed on iodine. This is followed by an unusual case of penile fracture. Meanwhile, Tristan falls in love with Avery. There is a twist when he sees Avery dancing and kissing Dr Max at a party.
At the end of the first episode, there is a dramatic scene of a man falling overboard and being rescued which sets a plotline for the next episode.
