Ryan Murphy, who has a reputation for doing shows that are rather serious and heavy in nature, like American Horror Story, Monster, American Crime Story, etc. told Deadline that Doctor Odyssey happened because of his interest in doing things that are different from what he has done till now. He said,

“I’m excited that I just keep moving from genre to genre, and I’m lucky to be able to do.”

The show is quite different from what Murphy generally makes, and he also mentioned that it is his kind of throwback to The Love Boat, a show that he had loved as a child. Joshua Jackson, who plays Dr. Max Bankman on the show, also commented on its different nature and mentioned in an interview with Good Morning America that the show is made purely for entertainment purposes.
