The Empress Season 2 was announced in 2022 after period dramas began getting a lot of love from across the world. It is one of those rare historical dramas that does not focus on the Regency period, the Tudor family, or World War II. Instead, this German series centers on Empress Elisabeth I of Austria (also known as Sisi), a Bavarian duke’s daughter who married an emperor for love.
Her marriage to Emperor Franz Joseph made her one of the first celebrity royals. Now with The Empress Season 2 just around the corner, let us look back at where season 1 had left Elisabeth and Franz.
What happened to Franz and Elisabeth in The Empress Season 1?
Being a rebellious character, Elisabeth, played by Devrim Lingnau, finds her life at the royal Habsburg court extremely suffocating because of the rigid views that govern it.
When her mother-in-law Sophie, played by Melika Foroutan, suggests that she should consider returning to Bavaria and getting their marriage annulled owing to her problems with the court, she agrees.
Because of her fiery spirit, she keeps it from Franz that she is pregnant. However, as she leaves the palace, she runs into an angry mob of protestors. Unlike her husband, who retreats behind the gates, Sisi goes out among them and announces her pregnancy publicly.
Season 1 ends there with the screen going black just after Sisi’s dramatic pregnancy announcement.
While the first season did not show Sisi successfully leaving Franz, her pregnancy reveal has made fans wonder if she will be able to leave at all.
What is likely to happen to Franz and Elisabeth in The Empress Season 2?
With the trailer of The Empress Season 2 being out, it can be said with certainty that Elisabeth and Fraz have successfully steered past their first marital storm. However, the trailer also hints that problems for the couple are far from over.
Franz is suddenly faced with a powerful European adversary and Sisi feels herself under tremendous pressure of bearing a male child as the heir since her two other children are daughters.
The official synopsis for The Empress Season 2 reads:
"The first crisis is barely over and the young couple wants to enjoy their fresh marital bliss when dark clouds gather over Schönbrunn Palace: Franz (Philip Froissant) unexpectedly faces a powerful adversary in Europe. And Elisabeth (Devrim Lingnau) comes under great pressure, because an heir to the throne is to secure the future of the empire as quickly as possible."
It continues,
"When fate strikes with all its power, the couple's love threatens to finally break apart. And Elisabeth must fight not only for her family, but also for the integrity of her soul...”
Viewers can expect intense drama since Sisi wants to get more involved in politics along with Franz, who keeps getting torn between his mother and wife.
