Black Doves is all set to make a thrilling debut on Netflix on December 5. Black Doves stars Keira Knightley in the leading role as Helena Webb, a clandestine spy who has established her cover as the obedient wife of a politician. But as the saying goes, appearances can indeed be deceptive.
Under the veneer of her carefully established life, Helena works for a mysterious espionage organization called The Black Doves and has been slipping top secret information to them since a decade.
The inciting incident in Black Doves happens when Helena's secret lover Jason is secretly assassinated, putting her in harm's way. Helena's superior and spymaster Reed then pairs her up with a renegade and suave spy by the name of Sam, played by Ben Whishaw.
The two of them together must now race against time and do whatever it takes to expose an international geopolitical conspiracy that would have serious repercussions for London.
Although the show might hold audience attention to the extent that many of them might wonder about the truth of the said organization, the film is indeed based on fiction. There is no existing international espionage organization by the same name. Here's all that we know.
Black Doves creator opens up about the show
The show is created and written by Joe Barton who also serves as the executive producer. Alex Gabassi and Lisa Gunning have directed the episodes of the show by Harry Munday, Keira Knightley and SISTERS. Speaking about the genesis of the show, Barton spoke to Tudum by Netflix:
"I started writing the scripts for this show over last year’s Christmas holidays, fueled by turkey sandwiches and discarded bottles of cream liquor, to be now going into production with a cast and crew full of people whose work I admire so much is unbelievably exciting, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to get to see this show come to life."
The series has portrayed the international spy organization as a clandestine outfit that sells confidential state secrets to whoever makes the highest bid. When asked about the basis of such an organization in real life, Barton commented:
"Thought it was interesting to put a character like Helen into that, because the whole show is about exploring the different facets of her personality, her morals and ethics and worldview, her working for this cold, detached company, and what that might do to someone involved in it, felt like an exciting idea."
Having said that, Barton further confirmed that the show was after all based on fiction and has no relation to any true incidents or organizations. He added:
"Black Doves definitely veers more towards the fantastical side. There are real-world equivalents for some of the things Helen does — the police sent undercover officers to infiltrate an environmental group, for example, and some of these officers ended up having relationships and children with people in the group."
Where was Black Doves filmed?
The Netflix spy-thriller makes good use of location filming, having filmed the scenes exclusively on location at the beaches of South Bank. According to the second block location manager of the show, Pete Wimblett:
"We’ve used over 100 locations around London, a lot of them around Westminster and the South Bank. Somewhere like Borough Market is open practically every day for the majority of the day, so we can’t shoot inside it without a lot of restrictions, instead, we shot on a road close by, one where we can see Borough Market and then walk towards or past it."
Black Doves will be available for streaming exclusively on Netflix.
