Disney's beloved animated classic Tangled is set to get a live-action makeover and Michael Gracey, known for The Greatest Showman, is in negotiaions to direct the film, reveals Deadline.
Tangled will be a modern retelling of the classic Rapunzel fairytale. Named after Disney's 2010 Oscar-nominated animated feature of the same name, the new film is described as a revival. It will follow the same storyline as the original. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, known for titles such as Do Revenge, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Sony’s upcoming reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer has penned the new draft of the script.
What to expect from the film Tangled?
Nathan Greno and Byron Howard directed the original Tangled, which starred Mandy Moore as the voice of Rapunzel. She is a spirited young princess who is locked by a sorceress in an isolated tower with no door. Rapunzel uses her long, magical golden hair as a rope to climb down and escape, and embarks on adventure and romance even as she experiences the world for the first time.
Disney's 2010 Tangled added a modern twist to the classic story and the upcoming revival is expected to be a fresh take on the fairytale, in sync with the times.
Michael Gracey entered negotiations to direct Tangled for Disney
Michael Gracey could be a perfect fit to direct the new Tangled for his expertise and brilliant sense of musical dramas and children's book adaptations. Gracey is best known for his directorial debut, The Greatest Showman, a live-action musical drama that grossed $435 million worldwide. The film won awards in the music categories at the Golden Globes and Grammys.
Gracey recently co-wrote, directed, and produced Better Man, a musical semi-biography based on the life of British pop icon, Robbie Williams. He is also slated to direct upcoming children's book adaptations for Paramount Pictures.
The Tangled revival will be produced by Kristin Burr and Lucy Kitada under Burr! Productions. Burr! has previously collaborated with Disney on projects such as Christopher Robin and Cruella. The new film will feature some iconic music such as I See the Light, the Grammy-winning song from the 2010 original. There is also the possibility of expanding the original soundtrack. However, there has been no confirmation on the cast of the film.
