In Disclaimer episode 5, Nicholas' future hangs in the balance as a case of heroin addiction is revealed. The show stars Cate Blanchett as Catherine Ravenscroft, a television documentary journalist based in London, England.

Catherine's life begins to unravel when a mysterious book called The Perfect Stranger arrives, stirring up bitter memories of a long-kept secret. The show is inspired by the 2015 book by Renée Knight. In episode 4, the news of Catherine's affair with Jonathan is leaked by Stephen, who gives the pictures to Robert.

Robert is furious and asks Catherine to leave but says nothing to Nicholas. In Disclaimer, Nicholas kept his distance from Catherine until the novel's beginning. He has been cold to her for a long time.

Decoding what kind of person Catherine is in Disclaimer?

Catherine, a working woman devoted to Robert, surprises us in the final scenes of episode 4 by revealing a trait that bodes ill for her. As the scenes unfold, Catherine's darker side comes to the fore in terms of how her older self deals with her situation. The past indiscretions we learned about her in Italy return to ruin her marriage to Robert.

While sunbathing on one of the beautiful Mediterranean beaches, Catherine falls asleep and wakes to find Nicholas nowhere to be found. He has sailed out to sea on a small dinghy raft.

Neglectful parenting aside, what Catherine does next is unconscionable. She runs into the oncoming tide, crying out for help but wanting her son back more than anything else. Jonathan, who has taken up the challenge, swims out to retrieve Nicholas and pulls him back to shore.

The effort exhausts him, and he struggles to make it back. Lifeguards reach for the raft, but Jonathan begins to drown. Catherine turns her back on Jonathan when it's safe, keeping her son safe. She doesn't inform the lifeguards either, so her secret sinks to the bottom of the sea instead.

Disclaimer: Catherine gets confronted by her subordinate at her work

Catherine is dealing with both personal and professional problems when Stephen arrives at her workplace with copies of The Perfect Stranger in Disclaimer episode 5.

A book and some pictures sent by a stranger were all it took to destroy her marriage, her relationship with her son, and her career. This is an interesting commentary on Disclaimer culture. It shows that not only was her friendship with her co-workers unhealthy, but so were the working relationships themselves, as her co-workers were quick to tear her down.

Stephen reveals something scandalous to Catherine, after which Jisoo pulls him in and gathers all the information she can to use for her career victory.

This is exactly what happens when Jisoo distributes copies of The Perfect Stranger throughout the office within a day, without even talking to Catherine about it privately. This means that while Catherine may have been respected, simultaneously, she is not loved by her staff.
