What If...? recently came to an end with its third season finale hitting the screens on December 29, 2024. The third season of What If...? was by far the biggest in terms of narrative development and the ensemble cast. The adult animated show from the Marvel Cinematic Universe consisted of numerous easter eggs and references to several key Marvel events and characters.

While the finale delved into detail about the Watcher's background and Peggy Carter's future in the MCU, fans of What If...? were disappointed by the conclusion that the third season offered.

A recent post surfaced on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, asking fans of the show to chip in their narrative scenarios that could have made for a better show. Several fans expressed their ideas for alternative storylines that could have been picked up by Marvel. One user commented:

"What if Tony Stark had never said I Am Iron Man?"

While another user wrote:

"What if Captain America never crashed into the Artic."

One user speculated:

"What if Red Skull sacrificed himself for the soul stone"

While another user asked:

"What if the other half snapped but they don't use time travel to get back the stones"

What is What If...? all about?

What If...? is an adult animated show that picks out alternative situations and timelines from the original Marvel canon and develops the narrative around them. In doing so, it gives expression to several long-standing fan expectations and anticipated storylines. Such a concept for a show often acts as a double-edged sword.

When the narrative hits the right spot, praise and adulation for the show abound. On the other hand, any departure from what fans of the show might expect often leads to disapproval. In this connection, What If...? might rightfully be referred to as a polarizing show that often evokes extreme reactions from its fans.

While arguably there were a few weak instances of narrative development in the most recent season, for instance, the episode where Howard the Duck is married to Darcy and tries to save his offspring from peril, there is no doubt that redeeming moments like the camaraderie between Bucky Barnes and The Red Guardian adequately make up for the same.

Will there be a What If...? season 4? Speculations explored

It is widely believed that the third season is supposed to be the end of the road. However, owing to the fascinating nature of the show itself, audiences can never have enough of it as it seems.

While recently speaking with The Geekcentric Podcast, Marvel Studios' Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation Brad Winderbaum confirmed that the third season was indeed the closing act of a three-part anthology. He added:

"We always looked at it as, it's an anthology first and foremost, but that it would have an overarching narrative, especially when it comes to Uatu and his story as the Watcher and his struggle. Even though all three seasons culminate by the finish line, it is a slow burn and kind of keeps that anthological element of the story throughout, but if you look at the final episodes of each season as kind of a Watcher Act 1, Act 2, Act 3, I think it does stand alone as a Watcher story. And in terms of tying to the MCU, we do follow very closely the mythology that’s being set up for the multiverse as the MCU unfolds. Whether it’s kind of the revelation that the multiverse exists or the idea that it’s all now harnessed by Loki sitting in the center of the multiversal tree of stories, or, you know, as will be revealed over time why this was the perfect moment to culminate 'What If…?' in its third season."

What If...? season three is available on Disney+.
