Daredevil: Born Again Episode 4 finally brought that much-awaited reunion between Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Jon Bernthal’s the Punisher. While they were not at all warm to each other and the Punisher almost chopped Daredevil’s head off with an axe, Bernthal felt that this scene only serves as “just a toe dip” for his character. In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, he further added,
“It was like, Let's see if this works. Let's see if there's a real openness and a hunger to let Frank be what Frank is, which is dark enough to have the courage and the boldness to turn your back on the audience and to make it difficult, to make it enormously psychologically complex and to steer away from any cuteness or humor and to really go full bore.”
While the Punisher will be featured in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, it is now already known that Bernthal will have his own show with the Punisher as the central character, and that is supposed to be much grittier and more brutal than what is shown in the world of Daredevil: Born Again. In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, in the original version, Bernthal said,
"I didn't see the version of Frank."
Let us now explore his reasons behind believing so in detail.
Jon Bernthal did not find his version of Frank in Daredevil: Born Again
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bernthal said that with the Punisher’s introduction in Daredevil: Born Again,
“I feel like it's opened the door to getting closer to the Frank Castle that I really, really want to portray.”
However, since the show had gone through a major overhaul post the filming of 6 episodes and Bernthal was contacted during the first version of the show by Netflix, which was more like a procedural drama, he said,
“Ultimately, I didn't see it. I didn't see the version of Frank, and what they wanted from Frank [didn't] really make sense to me and I thought would not appeal to the fans and wouldn't be congruent. It was not something I was really interested in doing. So we had to walk away.”
However, after the first version did not work out well, Marvel brought in new writers and Dario Scardapane as the showrunner, and things went better with Bernthal as he was included regarding the discussion of shaping up his character in Daredevil: Born Again.
He said,
“They really brought me into the conversation. We really got specific about where Frank is psychologically, where Frank's at physically.”
Moreover, talking about how playing The Punisher over the years has shaped his vision about the character, Bernthal added,
“Sometimes you have to be very, very clear with your intentions in this business. You can't get confused with how much you love something, how much you love playing something, how much you want to do something. You got to make sure you're serving it. You got to make sure you're doing justice to the people that believe in it and doing justice to the iterations that have come before you.”
This clearly explains why he was not okay with the initial version of Daredevil: Born Again and chose to walk away. However, with his own Punisher special in the pipeline and his confirmed presence in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, fans can expect to see a lot more of the gritty and ruthless Punisher they have come to love.
Daredevil: Born Again can be streamed on Disney+, with new episodes dropping every Tuesday.
