The series finale of What If... has finally arrived, wrapping up three exciting seasons filled with unpredictable twists and thrilling new versions of beloved Marvel characters. While it wasn’t perfect, this season offered us a wild ride through the multiverse, leaving us with some unforgettable characters and stories.
And now that the show is over, let's dive into how the finale might have set up a brand new team for Marvel fans to look forward to.
After three seasons of exploring alternate realities, the What If...? series brought us to an epic conclusion, showcasing some of the highest stakes we've seen. The show has been all about Variants, different versions of familiar MCU heroes, and this finale didn’t disappoint.
From Peggy Carter taking the super soldier serum and becoming Captain Carter to a Storm wielding the powers of Thor, it’s been a rollercoaster ride through the multiverse.
New team for Marvel
Before the credits rolled, Marvel Studios treated us to an exciting montage of new characters that could potentially appear in future MCU stories. Let’s take a closer look at these new and strange Variants.
Six-armed Spider-Man
Kicking off the credits was a weird version of Spider-Man but with a twist. This Spider-Man has six arms instead of the usual two! Sporting the classic red suit with white eyes on his mask, this six-armed Spide-Man would be a shocking addition to the MCU if he ever made an appearance. It’s a bizarre but exciting take on one of Marvel’s most iconic heroes.
Bride Gamora
Next up, we see Gamora in a completely new look. Instead of her usual Guardian of the Galaxy outfit, she’s wearing a wedding dress, holding her sword, and sporting a veil.
What’s even more interesting is the possibility that this version of Gamora could be a mix of her character and Thena from Eternals, with her sword and white dress resembling Thena's style. No matter the backstory, this version of Gamora would be a formidable force, just like the original.
Thanos: Weapon X
Imagine Thanos, one of the most terrifying villains in the MCU, with even more power. In this Variant, Thanos is merged with Wolverine’s Weapon X persona. This version of Thanos not only has advanced technology but also Wolverine’s iconic adamantium claws! While it’s unclear how this version came to be, it would be a force to reckon with.
Kamala Khan as the Wasp
One of the most surprising Variants in this montage is Kamala Khan, better known as Ms. Marvel, who’s now wearing the suit of Hope Van Dyne, the Wasp. She’s seen using her Noor energy powers and flying through the air in the Wasp suit, with her Ms. Marvel logo on the front.
How she came to possess the Wasp suit remains a mystery, but this exciting mashup hints at some thrilling crossovers in the future.
Howard the Scarlet Witch
Next, we see Howard the Duck, yes, you read that right, as the Scarlet Witch! With glowing red eyes, a dark red jacket, and vampire-like teeth, this Variant of Howard has tapped into the Scarlet Witch’s dangerous powers.
Given Howard’s usual chaos and unpredictability, combining him with such powerful abilities would surely lead to some wild and potentially destructive consequences.
Silver Surfer Jubilee
Jubilee, the mutant with light-based powers, is reimagined as the Silver Surfer in this montage. She’s seen riding the classic Silver Surfer board with her skin glowing silver, and her powers seem to have evolved as well.
Seeing Jubilee in this powerful role would be an exciting development, especially given her playful nature, which might be interesting to see with such immense cosmic power.
Ikaris and Howard Stark dancing
Finally, the montage ends with a surprising and charming pairing: Ikaris and Howard Stark, dressed to impress, sharing a dance. While the backstory behind this unlikely duo is unclear, it’s fun to imagine what might have led to this moment. Howard Stark, known for his charisma and charm, and Ikaris, with his immense power, would make quite the duo on and off the dance floor.
Riri Williams as The Punisher
Imagine Riri Williams, aka Ironheart, merging her tech-savvy brilliance with the Punisher's grit. In this alternate reality, Riri sported massive weaponry and a Punisher emblem on her chest, creating a bold and fearsome figure. She even channeled some War Machine vibes with a Gatling gun strapped to her back.
Dragon Hawkeye
Perhaps the wildest twist was Hawkeye fused with a dragon. Sporting a mythical arrow and the head of a dragon, this Variant left fans scratching their heads and dreaming up countless theories about his origins.
With so many different Variants and adding more variants to the list, the unique mashups of characters, could this finale be teasing a new team for the MCU? While it’s still unclear how these characters might fit into the larger MCU storylines, this montage hints at a team of incredibly diverse and powerful heroes.
Whether they’re brought together by fate or some cosmic event, these characters could form the core of a new team that will take on even greater threats in the multiverse.
The What If...? series finale has left us with a lot of exciting possibilities for the future of the MCU. Whether it’s new versions of classic heroes or unexpected mashups, the multiverse has opened up a world of storytelling opportunities.
We may not have all the answers yet, but one thing’s for sure: the future of the MCU looks incredibly exciting.
As the credits rolled, I couldn’t help but wonder if we’ll see these new versions of characters in upcoming movies or series. The multiverse has only just begun to unfold, and I’m sure we’ll be seeing more surprises in the near future.
