Black Doves, Netflix’s newest offering in the thriller genre stars Keira Knightley’s Helen Webb as a spy who had an affair with a man without letting him know her real identity. When this man is killed, Helen’s world turns upside down as secrets emerge and violence erupts.
One of the major consequences of Helen’s affair and the eventual killing of her lover is how it affects her marriage with Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan), Helen’s husband. While talking to Tudum about her character Helen and what might be in store for her in the next season, Knightley said,
“I am fascinated by [Helen and Wallace’s] marriage. Now, you have the fact that Wallace (Andrew Buchan) knows that an affair has happened or suspects that an affair has happened. I think he’s possibly going to be questioning Helen in a way that he’s never questioned her before.”
What’s interesting here is that though it is almost certain that Wallace knows about Helen’s infidelity and believes it too, he refrains himself from talking about it to Helen or asking her any kind of questions.
Dani (Agnes O'Casey) had informed Wallace of Helen’s affair and despite him refusing to believe it at first, it’s clear that Wallace knows that Dani is telling the truth. While Helen’s role as a doting mother and wife does make it difficult to imagine her having an affair, Wallace had his own reasons to not question her about the same.
Let us now explore in detail why Wallace did not go all out on Helen in Black Doves regarding her cheating on him.
Wallace does not question Helen about her affair despite knowing it in Black Doves
While it is only natural for partners to get angry when they come to know that they have been cheated on, Wallce’s reaction in Black Doves is quite different from it. Even after he comes to know of Helen’s affair, he maintains the fact that he does love her as he has done since the day they met.
Wallace’s love for Helen and the life they built together was shown to be too strong for him to go ahead and expose her affair to the world or even turmoil her for what she did. Given the kind of position they both hold in society, Wallace knew if Helen’s affair became public knowledge, it would destroy their lives. Therefore, he decided against it.
Moreover, Wallace always believed in fighting for what one loves and since he loved Helen with all his might, he let this affair slide without making a huge scene about it. While this is very unlikely behavior when thought from a logical perspective, from the viewpoint of a husband and the father to Helen’s children, Wallace’s actions do make sense.
Wallace does not want to hamper his professional life in Black Doves
Besides love, Wallace’s political and professional ambition also served as reasons to not make Helen’s affair public knowledge. Since it was clear in Black Doves Season 1 that Wallace was becoming a potential contender for the post of British PM after the present PM was to resign, he thought it was best to not jeopardize the chances of that with the scandal of a divorce.
Wallace knew that if the media came to know what was going on in his marriage, it would become sensational news and that would significantly dampen his chances of becoming the PM, a position he wants so badly. Therefore, from a rational viewpoint also, Wallace decided that it was best to keep his wife’s affair under wraps.
However, whether this attempt would be successful and Helen’s affair would forever remain hidden or whether it would come out and cause further complications, remain to be seen in the second season of Black Doves.
Black Doves can be streamed on Netflix.
