Although both the legal dramas were created by Aaron Korsh, the Suits finale did not set up Suits LA. The Suits' finale aired in 2019, and its spin-off, Suits LA, is set five years later and is majorly focused on a new story with new characters.
The spin-off Suits LA was planned in February 2024, and it premiered on NBC, on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at 9 PM ET. The plot of Suits LA in present times delves around Ted Black (Stephen Amell), a former New York prosecutor turned Los Angeles-based entertainment lawyer. The show delves into the life of Ted Black the founder of a law firm in Los Angeles where he handles top Hollywood celebrity cases. However, happening and exciting his job profile may sound personally he is seen dealing with the loss of his brother Eddie.
Suits is based on Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) and Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams). The original series is based on the plot in which Mike, who has no law degree, is hired by Harvey due to his strong photographic memory. The popular legal drama had a successful nine-season run, and by the end, the viewers saw the characters' stories were wrapped up in the most heartwarming way. Even though Suits and its spin-off, Suits L.A., are both legal dramas closely associated with each other, the Suits finale did not set up the plot for Suits L.A.
However, to not disappoint the Suits OG fans, creator Aaron Korsh has teased the return of multiple characters such as Harvey Specter and Louis Litt.
Is Suits LA based on the Suits finale?
One of the major reasons why the Suits finale episode did not set up Suits L.A. is because the finale of the long-running legal drama is set on a different timeline, setting, and providing closure to the major plotlines of the show on the finale. The show was mainly based on Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht), Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman), Donna Paulsen (Sarah Rafferty), and Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams).
Harvey gets hitched to Donna in the same ceremony that Louis married Sheila, welcoming their baby daughter. Harvey decided to leave Pearson Specter Litt and join Mike and Rachael in Seattle, where they were building a new legal firm. Meanwhile, Louis stepped into the role of a managing partner taking charge of the firm. The finale episode showed all the characters- Harvey, Louis, and Donna finding peace and resolving differences among each other.
While on the other hand, Suits LA introduces a whole new plot and setting, while making it a fresh start. The main protagonist of the series, Ted Black, is shown as a former federal prosecutor in New York who shifts to Los Angeles and establishes an entertainment law firm. The series is based on Ted's law firm, and the cases they are about to handle would be different from Harvey's corporate legal battles in Suits.
However, not to upset the OG Suits fans, especially after its Netflix success in 2023, creator Aaron Korsh has embedded some links that tie Suits and Suits LA.
Exploring the ties between Suits and Suits LA
Even though the Suits finale does not set up Suits L.A. premises, we can see the return of a few characters including Harvey Specter played by Gabriel Macht who will reprise his role in three episodes. It is clear that Ted Black and Harvey Specter are old friends from their office in DA; Harvey might assist Ted in one of his cases.
Additionally, show creator Aaron Korsh in an interview with Entertainment Weekly has expressed interest in exploring further crossovers suggesting there might be cameos of Suits characters in Suits LA.
" As the series goes, you're going to discover that there is some crossover with the history of the characters in the show and some of the Suits characters."
In an interview with Entertainment Weekley, Stephen Amell who plays Ted Black in Suits LA continued as he teased Harvey Specter's return to the spin-off and said,
"You'll notice behind the desk that there's a picture of a young Ted Black with what can be a young Harvey Specter, so there's a history between the characters. We came up together in the D.A office. I am very much of a fan of his character and I think that dynamic is something viewers will enjoy"
In the same interview, Korsch cleared out that he had no intention of doing a Suits Season 10; hence, he came up with the idea of a spin-off. He continued,
"So this is meeting a whole new group of characters and exploring their dynamics and their passions and their fears and their hopes and their dreams. It's fun going back at the beginning of something"
Gabriel Macht surprised all the fans as he showed up at the Suits L.A. premiere held on February 20, 2025. Even though he isn't returning as a regular in Suits LA. He is set to make a guest appearance in the spin-off series.
