Star Wars: Skeleton Crew surprised fans with a surprising shoutout to another beloved Disney franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean. The reference to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise occurs during a scene involving Jod and the pirates after Brutus' crew captures him. This had fans go back and observe the number of times Star Wars: Skeleton Crew referenced the popular film series.
The sixth episode, "Zero Friends Again," has very little screen time for the adult characters. Instead, this Star Wars: Skeleton Crew episode focuses on the kids, and one of its best moments is focusing on KB's vulnerability.
Did Star Wars: Skeleton Crew pay tribute to Pirates Of The Caribbean?
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew treated fans with another brilliant episode this holiday season. It follows right after Wim activated the booby trap after Jod betrayed the four kids in the fifth episode, "You Have a Lot to Learn About Pirates." After that, he climbs out of the lair with as much treasure as he can carry but gets caught by Brutus' crew after bounty hunter Pokkit's tip.
Jod, or Silvo as the pirates know him, is taken to Brutus' ship for execution. Brutus sentences Silvo to be executed by opening the airlock. However, the latter successfully pleads for the right to equal time, a part of the pirate code. Through this right, Silvo tells pirates about the mint in At Attin. This convinces the pirates to stay the execution and go to At Attin.
This is similar to a scene from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. In that scene, the protagonist, Captain Jack Sparrow, successfully pleads for the right to parlay Barbossa, Sparrow's former first mate. In theory, this right allowed the pirates to negotiate terms for safety on two sides. However, Jack ends up as Barbossa's prisoner even after the parlay, and the same happens to Silvo.
However, this is not the only reference to Pirates of the Caribbean in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
Other Pirates of the Caribbean references in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
That is not the only moment from Star Wars: Skeleton Crew that was similar to moments from Pirates of the Caribbean. In the second episode, "Way, Way Out Past the Barrier," we are taken to Port Borgo, a planet filled with dangerous pirates. Fans have found the planet similar to Isla Tesoro, a part of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
However, one of the most noticeable references to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride is the scene where the four kids are thrown inside the prison. They are in a cell that looks like a cave, similar to the theme park ride. On the ride, pirates attempt to order a dog to bring the key to the cell. Like that, the Skeleton Crew kids try convincing the rat inside SM-33 to get the key.
The droid's name is a reference to another Disney pirate
One of the important characters in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is the droid SM-33, who was also a part of the ship's previous pirate crew. But SM-33 is a sly reference to another iconic Disney character related to pirates. That character is none other than Peter Pan's Mr. Smee, who is Captain Hook's boatswain. Even the name SM-33 is just Smee spelled like a droid.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew may have references to several other pirate characters across pop culture in future episodes. Six episodes have been released to the public, and all of them are available to stream on Disney+.
