After the chilling events of the Squid Game season 2 finale, fans are waiting for updates on the show’s third season with bated breath. The third chapter will mark the final installment of the acclaimed Korean survival thriller series.

While season 2 features the deaths of some major characters, a number of fan favorites are able to make it out alive after playing three deadly games. One pair that is particularly in the spotlight throughout the season is the mother-and-son duo of Jang Geum-ja and Park Yong-sik.

Kang Ae-sim, who plays Geum-ja, had an interview last month, during which she seemingly dropped a major spoiler from Squid Game season 3. The actress said she shot for the show for significantly less time than the other actors, hinting at her character’s imminent death in the final season.

Around the release of Squid Game season 2, Kang Ae-sim appeared for an interview with GogglerMY along with Yang Dong-eun, who plays her on-screen son, Park Yong-sik. Talking about the experience of working on the show, Dong-geun said it was a little difficult as both seasons 2 and 3 were filmed back-to-back:

“That was the thing that was a bit difficult because I had to be away from home for so long.”

Ae-sim added that other actors had it more difficult as they had to film for a year, while she and Dong-geun were on the sets for only six months:

“It was just six months for us, but for some of the actors, it was a year [to film Seasons 2 and 3].”

Dong-geun then whispered something in her ear, raising suspicion about whether Ae-sim had let out a major spoiler from the final chapter. Spending only six months filming two seasons hints that both Jang Geum-ja and Park Yong-sik might die early in the third season.

Deaths are inevitable in Squid Game as only the player is supposed to survive at the end, eliminating the rest, 455. With Ae-sim’s comments, it seems like the mother and son might be one of the first ones to get killed off in the final season. In the season 2 finale, Seong Gi-hun’s rebellion against the guards fails, and he ends up losing his close friend Park Jung-bae.

While the season ends without revealing how the VIPs are going to handle the situation after the rebellion, it seems like the games will continue as a huge setup featuring the Red Light, Green Light doll is seen in the post-credits scene of season 2.

Jang Geum-ja and Park Yong-sik do not participate in the rebellion and survive the events of season 2. It will be interesting to see if Ae-sim’s comments actually turn out to be a spoiler and the mother-son duo dies in the initial challenges of the third season.

Jang Geum-ja and Park Yong-sik’s journey in Squid Game

Jang Geum-ja and Park Yong-sik are introduced in Squid Game season 2 as Player 149 and Player 007, respectively. Geum-ja, a war veteran and widow, is one of the oldest players in the challenge, who joins the games to get rid of her son’s debts after he loses everything in gambling.

However, she is unaware that her son, Yong-sik, too, has entered the games with the same motive. The two are shocked to see each other in the dorm and are scared about their lives in every challenge. But while Geum-ja votes to end the games, Yong-sik wants them to continue to earn money.

This creates a conflict between the two. After acing through two challenges together, they are separated in the Mingle game and remain worried about each other. They are finally reunited after the challenge and stay in the dorm while a group of players decides to rebel against the guards.

Squid Game season 3 is set to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2025.
