The Kings of Tupelo is set in Mississippi, the birthplace of Elvis Presley.

A bizarre South tale filled with Elvis impersonators, chopped-up body parts in a morgue freezer, and a poisoned letter to Barack Obama, these are just a few of the crazy things that you will find in Netflix's latest docu-series.

While everything about this bizarre story looks straight out of a movie, the events are very real and rooted in Tupelo, the town of Elvis, filled with people wanting to rise to fame just like him.

The man at the center of it all, Paul Kevin Curtis, an Elvis impersonator, was also accused of sending poisonous letters to President Obama and was arrested for it. However, the police didn't have enough evidence, and he was released. It was later revealed that he was framed by a man he had a long-standing feud with.

The first episode starts with former Mississippi state Rep. Steve Holland talking about Southerners:

“Southerners, we’re the best storytellers. Believe it or not, we actually like drama. And in this story right here, we’re proud to show you every characteristic of being a crazy Southerner.”

Who is Paul Kevin Curtis in The Kings of Tupelo?

Paul Kevin Curtis was born and raised in Tupelo. Like many children his age, he became an Elvis impersonator and made a career out of it. While Elvis impersonators were rampant in Tupelo at that time, Paul wanted to be different.

Therefore, he thought of the 'Double Trouble' act, a double act starring him and his brother Jack Curtis. The act was based on the fictional story of what would happen if Elvis' stillborn twin brother had survived.

While their act became popular, Paul married Laura Curtis, an Elvis fan, and the two eventually started a family. However, with a family to feed, Paul also worked as a janitor in a nearby hospital. This is the starting point of the crazy tale that would go down in history.

One day, while working in the morgue, Paul went to have a drink from the morgue freezer and instead discovered a freezer filled with body parts, with one head of a person he had just seen in the hospital a few days back.

Paul accused the hospital of human trafficking, which they denied, saying the body parts belonged to a donor. However, Paul lost his job but became obsessed with proving his conspiracy right. Eventually, he was arrested in April 2013 for sending a ricin-laced letter to President Obama.

As Kevin narrated in the last episode of The Kings of Tupelo, he wanted to focus on his family after the scandal and mend the relationships he lost with them in his frenzy.

However, just as the audience thought he was over with his conspiracy days, he returned to his investigations nine months later, as shown in the docuseries.

The three-part docuseries is now available to stream on Netflix.
