After much uncertainty around LOTR's latest, The Rings of Power has finally been confirmed for Season 3.

While the Amazon Prime show based on J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings was initially meant to be a five-season project, deteriorating viewership numbers jeopardized the franchise's future.

But fans positively received the Season 2 finale, which aired on October 3, 2024. Now, showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne have finally confirmed that they are preparing for Season 3.

The show accounts for Tolkien's history of the Middle-Earth and is set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit (1937) and The Lord of the Rings.

The show recounts the tale of the Second Age of Earth, ''the forging of the Rings of Power, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the fall of the island kingdom of Númenor, and the last alliance between Elves and Men.''

LOTR showrunners confirm The Rings of Power Season 3

McKay and Payne's announcement about The Rings of Power Season 3 confirms that the show's future is good and it has moved one step forward in its original five-season plan.

While viewership did not reach its high with Season 1, the show really picked up with the second half of Season 2, and more fans became invested in the spin-off's storyline.

Amazon executive Jennifer Salke said they will "continue to make the show as long as we see global customers loving it and watching it."

While the showrunners were careful not to slip any plot details for The Rings of Power Season 3, McKay did tease that they had been working on the new season since February,

''We’re prepping now, very, very intensely. We do [have some exciting stuff coming]. It's gonna be really good. We're excited.''

What can we expect from The Rings of Power Season 3?

The finale for The Rings of Power Season 2 was power-packed and made for an interesting ending. One of the fans' biggest suspicions came true as we finally learned the stranger's identity in the Season 2 finale, who was revealed to be none other than Gandalf.

He joins Tom to begin his training, which could be a big plot point for Season 3. Elsewhere, Celebrimbor, the Elven smith, is killed by Sauron, who demands to know the location of the nine rings. While Celebrimbor dies at the hands of Sauron, he curses him before dying that the rings will lead to his downfall.

While the Dark Wizard's identity is yet to be revealed, many fans suspect he is Saruman. Refuting this theory, showrunners teased about his identity and role in the upcoming season,

"The Dark Wizard has an important role to play in the doings of Middle-earth, and in the development of our wizard, who's now coming into his own. Tom Bombadil has told him, 'You're destined to face him. And then destined to face Sauron.' So the Dark Wizard's fate is not decided and his name is not out there yet, but it would almost defy the laws of gravity and physics for it to be Saruman''

With the showrunner's latest remarks about Season 3, one can only speculate that the show will hit the screens in late 2026. While this is purely speculation, we await the latest news about the Season 3 release date.
