1923 Season 2, Jack Dutton died in the penultimate episode

While many characters met their fate in the penultimate episode of 1923 Season 2, fans will surely mourn the loss of Jack Dutton the most.

As Jacob travels to Livingston to await his nephew Spencer's arrival in Montana, he entrusts Jack and Zane with managing the ranch. In his youthful naivety, Jack decides to seek adventure and follows his great-uncle Jacob, an impulsive decision that ultimately gets him killed.

The seeds of his tragic death were sown the moment Banner instructed his men to wait for Spencer at the train station and kill him. He says:

“Get to the train station. If this Spencer Dutton steps off, put a hole in him...we kill the whole lot of them.”

Later, Cara Dutton calls Jack a "stupid boy" when she hears that he has ridden off in the night to meet Jacob. When Banner's men confront Jack, he is not on guard, assuming they are from the Livestock Commission. He boasts about being the second-best gunman after his uncle Spencer—moments before Clyde shoots him dead, standing over his body and declaring:

“If you’re a close second, I’m not too worried about the first''

Jack Dutton's death hints at an explosive finale to 1923 Season 2

While Jack's death is truly tragic, it will be one of the main driving forces of the Season 2 finale. Looking back, his father's death set the Duttons on a path of revenge in Season 1, and Jack's death in Season 2 will repeat history.

Now that Spencer is set to join Jacob and Cara, Donald Whitfield's downfall is imminent. While the Duttons will be fueled by vengeance, Jack’s death is particularly heartbreaking, as he leaves behind his young bride, Elizabeth, and their unborn child.

Speaking about the impact of Jack's death on the 1923 Season 2 finale, Brian Konowal (Clyde) hinted (via The Hollywood Reporter):

''Viewers are going to be very happy with the ending. There will be surprises no one could anticipate, including the actors when they were reading the script. It will not disappoint.”

Talking about how his character, Clyde, has been unleashed and is now coming for Spencer and the Duttons, he added:

“Clyde has now been unleashed. He’s totally loyal to Banner. He’s been enjoying the badge, and now he’s almost radicalized to go get these Duttons. He’s ready to destroy them.''

The 1923 Season 2 finale will be released on April 6, 2025.
