Daredevil: Born Again, Episode 5 includes a bank heist where Irish mobsters rob a particular object: an orange stone in a safety deposit box. The gem is not regular, as an apparent artificial shine is added to it during post-production. This has created speculation that the item could be an Infinity Stone, the Soul Stone.
The Soul Stone first appeared in Avengers: Infinity War and was acquired by Thanos after he had Gamora sacrificed on Vormir. Unlike the other Infinity Stones, its powers were never fully utilized in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). If the stone in Daredevil: Born Again is the Soul Stone, it would have significant implications for the show and the overall MCU narrative.
But there are reasons to doubt this theory too. The Infinity Stones were presumably restored to their timelines by Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame. Furthermore, how one so powerful managed to end up in a bank vault is unknown.
The role of the Orange Stone in Daredevil: Born Again, Episode 5
Matt Murdock is caught in a bank heist as the Irish thugs celebrate Saint Patrick's Day in Episode 5. Collins reports that the robbers made Yusuf Khan, the father of Kamala Khan, assist them in opening the bank vault. They do not steal cash or assets, though. Their target is an orange gem, which is offered with a special glow.
Matt Murdock can thwart the robbers from stealing the stone, but the scene is questionable. If this is a regular gemstone, why was it kept in a vault with maximum security? The visual focus on the stone makes one wonder if it is something more important.
With the MCU's background, some fans think that this could be a fragment of the Soul Stone or another cosmic relic whose powers are not known.
The Soul Stone and its power
The Soul Stone played an important role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Unlike all the other Infinity Stones, its complete powers were not revealed on-screen. As per the comics, the Soul Stone can control souls, bring back to life beings, and even manipulate more than one reality.
In the Secret Warps comic book storyline by Marvel, the Soul Stone can store souls from various universes. This may apply to Daredevil: Born Again, particularly with the MCU getting further into the Multiverse Saga. If the stone in the episode is truly the Soul Stone, it would be a method of bringing back characters who are deceased.
The actor Elden Henson will appear as Foggy Nelson in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, even though his character was killed. This has provoked speculations that the Soul Stone, if it exists, may be part of bringing him back.
The Pitfalls of the Theory
Albeit the rumors, there are some issues with the theory that the stone in Daredevil: Born Again is an Infinity Stone. As per Avengers: Endgame, Steve brought back all of the Infinity Stones to their initial locations in time. This indicates that the Soul Stone would be on Vormir and not in a New York bank.
The MCU has also developed that the Infinity Stones were in the main timeline destroyed by Thanos. Another problem is how the stone came to be in the vault. If it were indeed an item of such immense power, there is little chance that it would remain unsecured in a normal bank.
There is no obvious reason given in the episode as to why the stone is there, which leaves the audience open to interpretation. It is also conceivable that the glowing effect was created for dramatics instead of to show that it is related to the Infinity Stones.
The appearance of an orange stone in Daredevil: Born Again, Episode 5, has sparked speculation that it may be the Soul Stone. The MCU has not yet fully delved into the powers of the Soul Stone, so it could be a tool for future plots. There are, however, strong reasons why this theory is unlikely.
The Infinity Stones were said to be returned or destroyed, and no one is sure how such an object would find itself in a New York bank vault. Even if the stone isn't an Infinity Stone, it could still be a valuable artifact in the MCU. Whether or not it becomes involved in future episodes is still to be determined.
