Tamia Coop Cooper, played by Bre-Z, has been one of the important cast members of the popular sports drama All American since its debut in 2018. Created by April Blair, this series is set in Los Angeles and follows the story of Spencer James (Daniel Ezra), a high school footballer who struggles with two contrasting spaces—one in the posh Beverly Hills and the other in his tough neighborhood.
Coop, a former gang member turned music buff, faced several life-threatening situations; however, it was in Season 3 when she faced a near-death experience. In the season finale, she was shot during a violent shooting with a local gang member, an incident that left her heavily injured. However, in Season 4, Coop survived the fatal shooting.
As one of the main cast members, Bre-Z's portrayal of Coop has been an important part of the show. Other notable characters include Cody Christian's Asher Adams, Greta Onieogou's Layla Keating, and Samantha Logan's Olivia Barker.
How did Coop survive in All American?
Coop survived the shooting after quick intervention from the medical team. After being shot, Coop was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors were able to stabilize her condition. With determination and resilience, she survived the near-death condition.
In Season 3, Coop's gang affiliation threatened her life to a greater extent. While she was prepping to leave for Los Angeles, she left on a bus with her partner Patience (Chelsea Tavares). However, their bus was pulled up on the suspicion of having drugs. The police got nothing because Coop got rid of drugs before she left L.A. She then visited the local gang member Monique's (Erica Peeples) house. It was Mo who called the police on Coop for her to get arrested. Mo pulled a gun on Coop, and in the altercation, Coop got shot.
In All American Season 4, it was shown that Coop survived the shootout, but she slipped into a coma for three days, and her injury had long-lasting effects, such as diminishing her lung capacity, forcing her to stop making music. On the other hand, Preach shoots Mo dead because Mo shot Coop. However, since Preach is on parole, Coop refuses to let him take the blame. When Coop woke up from the coma, she lied to the police that she killed Mo in an act of self-defense.
What did All American star Bre-Z feel about Coop's near-death experience?
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bre-Z opens up about Coop's near-death experience when she revealed that she was shocked to hear about Coop being shot. She revealed her call with the showrunner,
"Okay, so see the finale, Coop's going to get shot. And I was like, What do you mean?! She didn't tell me I was going to live or die. She just said she didn't want me to worry."
Bre-Z also got quite emotional after she knew Coop survived the shooting. She said,
"It was very emotional. And I think it was so emotional for our audience."
After facing the near-death experience, Coop's life changed significantly when she faced legal challenges and mental health issues too, which led her to step away from her music career. However, she discovered a passion for law and began working at Laura Baker's law office. By Season 6 she was accepted into the law school, marking a prominent point in her character arc. In Season 7 Episode 1, Coop visits Layla when the viewers learn that she graduated from law school.
