Apple TV+'s Silo has majorly kept the timeline a mystery. With the launch of the trailer for the second season, there are sufficient clues for the viewers to help them locate the timeline based on the events.
Based on Hugh Howkey's first Silo book, Wool, both seasons avoid revealing too much about the outside world and what lead to the humans being forced to be inside the central silos. Season 2 again explores a different neighboring silo without giving out too many details of the timeline.
The series even though seems highly influenced by the books, the creators do take some liberty with characters and timelines. It not only brings characters like Camille Sims and Judge Meadows but also makes tweaks to the timeline.
What are the major changes to Apple TV+'s Silo and the book's timeline?
1. Apple Tv's show Silo takes place at a later timeline than the books
Before Meadows dies in Silo Season 2, she requests Bernard to let her go outside and enjoy her freedom for the last time. However, Bernard is forced to deny her wishes and helps her with a VR headset. In the next scene of Silo Season 2, Episode 4, we see a subtitle stating 'Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve 2018'. This detail proves that the world was doing fine in 2018 and an apocalypse was yet to occur.
If the world was doing perfectly fine in 2018, the silos must have been built in the 2020s. The silos also mentioned that around 352 years have passed since the apocalypse, thus marking the event to easily around 2370.
In Hugh Howey's book titled Wool, we see the construction of the silos getting done in 2052 while the present timeline is 2345. In the book Juliette's story, it gets clearer that the book's timeline is 2345. Stating that the construction of silos has taken way before in the series than in the books.
2. Bernard confirms when the silos were built
In season 2 just before Bernard gave Luka access to the vault he reveals that the information database in the secret room provides limited knowledge about the silos. He also states the silos were built around 352 years before the present timeline. This shows that numerous generations might have been trapped inside the silos and could only venture with sealed uniforms.
This also gives a hint about the different timelines of the books and the series. That silos were constructed 352 years before the apocalypse. However, as we see in Season 2 Episode 4, we see Meadows discovering the 2018 Bilogical Forest through a VR set. It becomes clearer that the construction of silos took place before in the series and later in the books.
3. Silo Season 2 flashback ending explains the Apple TV series' timelines
Silo Season 2 ended with a flashback that focused on an interaction between a Congressman and Helen, a journalist. Although there are no suggestive images or subtitles, the visuals provide a glimpse of the 2020s. This again proves the timeline of the construction of the silos in and around 352 while for the books it was in the process of construction in 2052.
4. Solo's journey reveals when silo 17's rebellion took place
Even though Juliette tries hard to find out about Solo's life history she fails. However, in season 2, she was finally able to find out that Solo was barely 12 when silo 17's rebellion took place. The point that he was barely a teen ensures over three decades have passed in the show's timeline since silo 17's rebellion. This can also be regarded as a scene when the Apple TV series' timeline was established making it quite different from books.
