Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone fans finally found peace after the identity of John Dutton III's (Kevin Costner) grandfather was revealed in the 1923 Season 2 finale. While the prequel series did not explicitly state this, by process of elimination, only one contender now remains who could become John Dutton III's grandfather.

With Jack Dutton's tragic death in the penultimate episode, Spencer Dutton remained the strongest contender to become John III's grandfather. However, confusion still remained as Jack's wife, Elizabeth, was pregnant.

But after her husband's death, she moved out of the Dutton ranch and will likely raise her baby with her family in Boston, which rules out Jack's son becoming a Dutton in the future.

In addition, Spencer's wife Alex gave birth to a son and named him John, hinting that he will become John Dutton II (Costner's John III's father) in the future. This finally reveals that Spencer Dutton is John Dutton III's grandfather.

More on John Dutton's grandfather in 1923 Season 2 in our story.

Exploring all the Duttons 1923 teased that could have been John Dutton's grandfather

Costner's John Dutton's lineage and how he and his father, who briefly appeared in a flashback in Yellowstone, are related to the previous generations have been a mystery. While Sheridan has passionately expanded on the Dutton lineage, he has smartly omitted answering this question: Who is John Dutton III's grandfather?

Back in 1923 Season 1, there were three contenders for John III's grandfather- John Dutton Sr, Spencer Dutton, and Jack Dutton. Since John Dutton Sr. was the eldest Dutton and also shared the same name as Costner's Dutton, fans speculated that he would likely become his grandfather.

Unfortunately, with Donald Whitfeild's ongoing feud with the Duttons, John Sr. was the first one to die. Since he had no children other than Jack, he was ruled out as the grandfather, and the focus shifted to Jack.

Fans were certain that Jack would eventually become John III's grandfather after his wife, Elizabeth, was revealed to be expecting a child. However, when Spencer's return home was certain, and his wife Alex was expecting, things got confusing. With two Dutton babies on the way, anyone could have become John Dutton II, making either Spencer or Jack John III's grandfather.

However, Elizabeth had a miscarriage, which left Spencer as the only option, but Sheridan again threw a curveball and revealed that Jack and Elizabeth were again expecting a child.

After much suspense, the 1923 Season 2 finale finally revealed Spencer as John Dutton III's grandfather

Again, with Alex and Elizabeth both pregnant, either Spencer or Jack could be the father. But since 1923 Season 2, Elizabeth has been expressing her desire to leave the ranch life and go settle with Jack. Pair it with Spencer's return home and talks about him taking over the Dutton legacy, it was likely that he would be John III's grandfather, but it was still not confirmed.

Finally, the penultimate episode of 1923 Season 2 saw the sudden and tragic death of Jack Dutton, which forced Elizabeth to act on her decision. In the finale, she finally moved out of the ranch. While it was not explicitly shown, it is clear that Elizabeth's son will grow up far from the Dutton ranch, ruling out the possibility that he would become John III's father.

On the other hand, while Alex also tragically dies in the 1923 Season 2 finale, she gives birth to a son and also names him John, finally clearing that he would grow up to become John Dutton II, making Spencer John III's grandfather.
