Dexter: Original Sin follows a Dexter who is just out of college in Miami in 1991 and is somehow managing his dark urges by following the rules set by his adoptive father and making his kills in a way so that he never gets caught.

The show follows Dexter in his absolute prime and as he joins Miami PD. Created by Clyde Phillips, who also created New Blood, Michael C. Hall returns to Dexter: Original Sin as the narrator and the inner voice of younger Dexter as he starts his life in law enforcement.

After the first episode, while it seemed that the show’s creators had missed an obvious chance of a call back to one of Dexter’s most consistent efforts throughout all the Dexter shows, episode 2 has finally shed light on it.

As was seen throughout the original Dexter and New Blood, Dexter always used to bring donuts for his colleagues. This was a staple of his, and Dexter: Original Sin Season 1 Episode 2 finally gives the reason behind this behavior: to seem normal and not at all quirky.

Let us now explore why Dexter became the donut man at his workplace.

Dexter: Original Sin explains why Dexter always brought donuts to the station

Fans of Dexter know how alien a character he has always been and how it has always taken him much effort to mix with people. Despite being awkward and not knowing how to mingle, Dexter realized if he had to bond with his colleagues at the Miami PD, one way of doing it might be through food.

However, donuts were not his first choice of food, as Dexter: Original Sin Season 1 Episode 2 shows a 20-something Dexter offering a vegetable tray to his new colleagues who show no interest in it and find his gesture a bit weird.

With the help of Camilla Figg, a motherly figure for Dexter at the station, he understands that healthy food cannot make him win over his colleagues. Therefore, he thinks of bringing donuts the next day, and to his delight, it works.

Since then, Dexter had always brought donuts to the station, and this practice made him know all of Sadie’s Donuts’ employees. It was only in Dexter Season 7 that his habit was shown to be stopped suddenly since his desire and need to blend in and maintain a certain mask of normalcy had reduced by then. However, in New Blood again, Dexter is shown to be bringing donuts.

What makes Dexter fixate on donuts?

Dexter never stops bringing donuts for his colleagues simply because he realizes that is his way of making himself seem normal and friendly to the people at the station. Mixing with people has always been difficult for him, and Harry, his father, was particularly against him joining Miami PD for this reason only.

However, Dexter not only manages fine at his workplace, but he also makes the first of his friends at the station. He forms a genuine friendship with Masuka and Batista, and it all happens because of his idea of bringing donuts for his colleagues, making them appreciate Dexter for the first time.

It was through those donuts that Dexter found a sense of community and warmth, which ultimately kept him out of suspicion for his killings, and thus, he made bringing the donuts a lovable habit of his.

Dexter: Original Sin Season 1 Episodes 1 and 2 can be streamed on Paramount+, with new episodes dropping weekly and every Friday.
