Every new episode of Dexter: Original Sin takes us one step closer to the finale. The prequel of the acclaimed Showtime drama has just ten episodes, each filled with notable details and connections to the original show. The young Dexter Morgan's journey begins with his internship at Miami Metro, followed by unleashing his dark tendencies.

His adoptive father Harry Morgan discovered Dexter's dark urges when he was a kid, but instead of providing him medical support, Harry chose to let his son fulfill his tendencies through a moral code. The reason why Dexter Morgan is an iconic antihero is because he adheres to the code of only killing corrupt individuals who are a threat to society.

As seen in the flagship series, Dexter Morgan used a drug named M99 or Etorphine to sedate his victims before killing them. However in Dexter: New Blood, the drug is changed to Ketamine, which conflicts with the original show.

However, Dexter: Original Sin has got this covered, as the prequel reverses the change, and dives into how Dexter learned about M99 and begins using it as the drug of his choice. Continue reading to explore more about the change and how it was featured in the latest episode.

The sequel to the original series— Dexter: New Blood introduced a controversial retcon by changing Dexter’s sedative from M99 to ketamine. This not only creates confusion among fans but also raises questions about a sudden change in Dexter Morgan's choice, despite knowing that Ketamine effects are much less intense compared to M99.

This change was noticed in Dexter: New Blood when Angela Bishop figured out that Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher through traces of Ketamine. While it was a critical plot point, it went against the facts established in the original Dexter series.

This plot hole was noticed by most of the fans as they didn't expect such change and even discussed it online, notably on Reddit. However, Dexter: Original Sin Episode 5 "F is for F*ck-Up" nullified the Ketamine plot by revealing the backstory and how Dexter Morgan discovered the effects of M99 and will now be seen using the same as part of his ritual in Dexter: Original Sin.

As seen in Dexter: Original Sin Episode 5, Harry Morgan grounded Dexter due to his carelessness while killing Mad-Dog. In the previous episode, the victim woke up and almost ruined Dexter's plan.

While Dexter handled the situation, the mistake fueled Harry's anger which doesn't last long, as Harry eventually allows Dexter to return to his job. When Dexter sees his boss Tanya Martin watching a horse race, she also explains to Dexter that the horse has been sedated for hours so it does not kick the vet.

Impressed by its power, Dexter Morgan asks "What kind of drug could sedate an animal that large", to which Martin replies "Probably Etorphine" also known as M99. Tanya also revealed that it's quite powerful, leaving Dexter curious and happy to learn about a drug that could help him avoid carelessness.

Later in the episode, Dexter Morgan sneaks into a stable, and by creating a little chaos, he gets his hands on M99, Michael C. Hall's older Dexter explaining "Pop didn't do it for me. This was the drug of my choice". This way, Dexter: Original Sin reveals how Dexter Morgan began using M99 on his victims.

This hasn't just resolved some fan frustrations but also restores consistency with the original series. Now that Dexter has proved himself to Harry, it would be intriguing to watch him use M99 and fulfill his dark urges.
