The second and third episodes of Dexter: Original Sin, titled Kid in a Candy Store and Miami Vice respectively, were dropped on Paramount+ together and these two episodes bring back a lot of the nostalgia of the original Dexter series as it focuses on the Morgan family issues along with Dexter’s second kill after Nurse Mary.

Another highlight of Dexter: Original Sin Episode 3 is the introduction of the character Maria LaGuert, who was an extremely important character in the original show. Christina Milian plays the younger version of the character and her introduction takes the episode to a different high as fans would be able to connect the events of the episodes and they foreshadow the events of the original Dexter.

With a number of things happening both in the personal and professional life of Dexter in Dexter: Original Sin Episodes 2 and 3, let us now explore the events of these two episodes in detail.

The following article contains major spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin Episodes 2 and 3.

Dexter has his first day at work in Dexter: Original Sin

After committing his first murder, the second episode of Dexter: Original Sin sees him go to work, marking his first day at Miami PD. Already flushed with the excitement of his first kill, Dexter learns that Miami's murder rate is extremely high and the solve rate of those crimes is quite low.

This makes him even more excited as he understands that he can now choose his victims based on those unsolved cases. The happenings of this episode make him seem exactly like a kid in a candy store, which is also the name of the episode and a perfect one.

His first day at work also proves to be a field day as Dexter, along with Harry, goes to investigate a homicide where a man has been shot in the head. The sight of blood makes Dexter all happy and excited and as he offers his theories based on how the blood has spattered, the team doesn't really give him attention because of his rookie status.

However, Dexter knows that's rather good for him because he wouldn't of course want attention on him, for whatever reason it may be, and thus he just plays along with his teammates.

Dexter makes his second kill in Dexter: Original Sin

Dexter: Original Sin Episode 3 reveals Dexter’s next victim after Nurse Mary and it is a loan shark named Tony Ferrer (Roberto Sanchez). Batista told Dexter about Tony and the tragedy he caused to Rene and his family.

After borrowing money from Tony, Rene’s inability to pay him back leads to Tony threatening him and then shooting his mother by accident. However, this incident made Rene feel guilty as he had borrowed the money, and being unable to deal with his guilt, he decided to kill himself.

After listening to the whole story from Batista, Dexter decided to pay Tony a visit under the false name of Patrick Bateman as he also studied the case file. He borrowed money from Tony and also made him take a shot at a tree only to confirm that he had indeed killed Rene’s mother.

Following this, Dexter decided to kill him and after getting a full confession out of him he knocked him out and eventually killed him, making Tony his second victim.

Dexter dumped Tony at Everglades in Dexter: Original Sin

After killing Tony, Dexter brought his body to Everglades where he had dumped Nurse Mary as well. However, as he follows his usual procedure of feeling the victim to the alligators, a hand of Tony, with a unique ring on it, remains left behind as the alligators do not eat it.

This might land Dexter into trouble as the hand is very likely to be found by the authorities and since Tony’s prints are everywhere in their database, it would not be long before they identify the victim.

Moreover, Dexter also disposed of Nurse Mary’s earrings in that water and so if the investigation on Tony began, evidence related to Nurse Mary’s death can also be found.

Dexter landed himself in an awkward situation with Sofia in Dexter: Original Sin

Since Sofia had Nurse Mary’s earrings in Dexter: Original Sin, Dexter found himself consistently staring at her, or at the earnings to be more precise. However, this was perceived rather wrongly by Sofia, and everyone, including Harry and Deb, thought that Dexter had a crush on her.

Things reached a boiling point when Dexter tried to leave the dinner and Sofia followed him and also kissed him. For the extremely awkward character that Dexter is, he handled the situation rather well and left midway saying he had something to attend to.

However, this might not be the end of the story between them and it would be fun to see how Dexter is going to handle this new and unwanted attention that he would be having from Sofia.

Maria LaGuerta’s character is finally introduced in Dexter: Original Sin

After being absent in Dexter: Original Sin in the first two episodes, Maria LaGuerta finally makes her entry into the show. Maria is shown to be transferred to the Miami PD as a result of bashing the department in front of the press.

Captain Spencer is shown to be extremely annoyed with her and wants Harry to fire her for any reason he can find. However, despite having some characteristic flaws that might cause trouble for her, Maria is an extremely good detective and Harry starts admiring her skills and also helps her with one of the cold cases.

Maria’s introduction is important for the show as she was one of the major characters in the original Dexter and since a number of the original characters’ younger versions have been featured in Dexter: Original Sin, Maria’s addition will help with the coherence of the storyline.

Harry is keeping up his bad habits in Dexter: Original Sin

The second and third episodes of Dexter: Original Sin also focused on the Morgans as a family and the kind of issues they have to deal with. One of the recurring points of stress in the family is Harry’s health as he has been shown to suffer a heart attack right in the first episode.

As a result, Harry is asked to cut down on his smoking, drinking, and red meat consumption, and his kids, Deb and Dexter try their best to help him. However, despite making some progress initially, like replacing smoking with sucking on a lollipop, Harry soon falls back on his older habits, causing tension in the family.

Dexter: Original Sin shows Laura Moser’s flashback

A lot of flashbacks in Dexter: Original Sin focuses on the time before Harry adopted Dexter. In the latest episodes, there is the introduction of Laura Moser (Brittany Allen), Dexter’s biological mother, who was arrested on charges of drug dealing.

However, it was Harry and Bobby, his partner, who ensured her to be a criminal informant. Harry was able to break into Hector Estrada's cartel because of Laura’s help and they made major progress in the case because of her.

The flashbacks also revealed that Harry and Laura had started feeling some romantic sparks between them and Harry met her children Dexter and Brian at a time when he and Doris Morgan, Deb’s mother, and his wife were having trouble conceiving another baby.

Dexter gave Deb fake cocaine for her party in Dexter: Original Sin

Seeing Nurse Mary’s earrings on Sofia, Dexter realized that Deb had stolen them. Deb indeed had, and instead of pawning those earrings, she had given them to Sofia. However, seeing Dexter’s obsession with those earrings, Deb decides to make the best of the situation and asks him to get cocaine for her party.

Dexter aggress, only to give fake cocaine to Deb, which is a mixture of benzocaine and caffeine powder. However, it works for Deb and her friends who do not have much experience with drugs. This gets Dexter those earnings back from Sofia and he and Deb also go shopping to get replacement earrings for her.

Dexter: Original Sin Episodes 1-3 can be streamed on Paramount+ with new episodes dropping weekly on Fridays on Showtime.
