HBO's Lanterns is being filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, and is expected to continue for a while. The most recently leaked set images offer us glimpses of actor Aaron Pierre's John Stewart in action. It looks like the scene filmed is set before John Stewart, who the Green Lantern Ring chooses as a potential candidate. The character is wearing some sort of gray uniform and is seen holding a gun.

As the show continues to film over the next few months, we can expect to see more leaked set images featuring other characters. This is another update from this series this week, as it was also reported on Monday, March 31, 2025, that Nathan Fillion, who is playing the Green Lantern Guy Gardner in the upcoming movie Superman, will join the Lanterns series.

Who is involved in the upcoming Lanterns series?

As of now, we know that three human Green Lantern Corps members are set to appear in the upcoming Lanterns series. We know that John Stewart will be one of the show's co-leads, and the other will be Hal Jordan, played by actor Kyle Chandler. As mentioned earlier, Nathan Fillion will be reprising his role as Guy Gardner in the show, but the size of his role remains unknown.

Other than the three Lanterns, the show features these actors playing the following supporting characters:

  • Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry
  • Garret Dillahunt as a "modern cowboy," William Macon
  • Jason Ritter as Billy Macon, William Macon's son and Kerry's husband
  • Poorna Jagannathan as the cunning Zoe
  • Ulrich Thomsen as the Green Lantern villain Sinestro
  • Nicole Ari Parker as Bernadette Stewart, John Stewart's mother
  • Sherman Augustus as John Sr., John Stewart's father

What is Lanterns about?

The series will be featuring three Green Lantern Corps members: Hal Jordan (regarded as a legend), Guy Gardner, and John Stewart. Of these three, Stewart is a new recruit to the Green Lantern Corps, while Gardner and Jordan are experienced. All of them are responsible for protecting Earth as their precinct, as the Green Lanterns are regarded as police officers on a cosmic scale.

Jordan and Stewart are called to a small town in the U.S. to investigate a mysterious murder. But while unraveling this murder, the two uncover a dark, sinister secret that will tie into the wider DCU. The official logline for the series reads:

"The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland."

How to watch the series?

While there is no release date for the HBO series, we do know that the series will be released sometime early next year on HBO. The Showrunner for this series is Chris Mundy, who also performed the same duties for Netflix's Ozark. The series is described as a True Detective-style gritty procedural rather than a cosmic superhero show.

During the press conference in February 2025, James Gunn teased how the series will be different from the rest of the DCU by saying:

"We have Lanterns, which we just started shooting with HBO and Warner Brothers. And that is another really marvelous team of Tom King, Damon Lindelof and Chris Mundy, and they have been doing marvelous work. I've been watching the dailies with that. It's really so cool because it is connected to Superman, because we've got Guy Gardner in that, and then we got these Green Lanterns over here. And it's just such a different tone from what Superman is. And it's exactly what I want to bring to the DCU, is being able to have these very different films and television series that are still part of an overall, connected world, but have completely different feels to them."

Are you excited for the series based on the new leaked set images featuring Aaron Pierre's John Stewart?
