“I forgive him,” she said. “I think he was always my dad. I never saw that side of him, and even if it was something he did, that was some — I mean, everyone deserves to be forgiven.”

These were the words of Sarah Pagel in Dateline's episode after learning that her father, Michael Pagel, is the one who murdered her mother. After 14 years lying like a cold case and almost giving up all hope of discovering the truth, this news sent shockwaves through the family — Sarah, her two younger siblings who are minors, and their father, now revealed to be the culprit.

Following the murder, they relocated in an attempt to start afresh, while the media speculated about Mr. Pagel's guilt, who was not yet convicted. This accusation was hard for Sarah to process. However, it was not the end of the family's suffering.

The official synopsis of the episode Dateline: Window Of Opportunity states,

"A bombshell, more than a decade after the crime, reignites the investigation into the death of Sarah Pagel's mother, who was killed when Sarah was 7"

Renee Pagel was known for her kindness — she had served as a nurse for years and had recently donated her kidney to a stranger. The 41-year-old teacher and mother of three was found dead in her home, stabbed 50 times while she was recovering from kidney donation.

The major suspect in the case was Michael Pagel, her estranged husband, who had recently lost a court battle over their divorce and custody of the children. Unlike Renee, who, being the bread-winner of the family, juggled multiple jobs, Michael had either had a part-time job or no employment at all. However, he had certainly been the primary caregiver for Sarah and her siblings.

“We didn’t realise the situation until I was at least around 13, 14,” Sarah Pagel told NBC Dateline "It was very hard"

In 2020, Michael Pagel was arrested for murdering his wife, Renee, and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. By then, Sarah was 22, with her younger siblings, Joel and Hannah.

Later, Sarah also wrote a letter to the judge asserting that her father always took good care of all his children. Now with both parents gone, she described their loss as "indescribable pain."

The Dateline episode Window of Opportunity aired in 2021, bringing renewed attention to the long-forgotten case.
