Dateline Season 28 Episode 9, titled The Premonition, revealed how a Pennsylvania State Police Trooper killed his girlfriend's ex-husband by violently slashing his throat.

John Yelenic, a dentist, was found murdered in 2006, and the police later found it was one of their own who had murdered him. On investigation, it was found that Kevin Foley, a State trooper, was in a live-in relationship with John's ex-wife, and he had murdered him because of the hatred spewed by his girlfriend.

The police concluded that Kevin went to John's house to talk to him, but their discussion turned into a heated argument, with the state trooper finally murdering him.

Foley was later sentenced to life in prison without parole and is being held in Frackville, Pennsylvania.

Kevin Foley was a Pennsylvania State Police Trooper and Corporal Janelle Lydic's partner on many cases. She said she had assisted him on many cases of the Blairsville Borough Police Department. When she discovered that Kevin was now the boyfriend of Yelenic's ex-wife Michele Kamler, she did not suspect the state trooper because he was her senior.

Instead, the DNA she found under Yelenic's fingernails was not sent for investigation but saved in the fridge at Blairsville Borough Police Department station. As told on Dateline, the case was re-opened after a year when Yelenic's cousin reached out to the police, and Deputy Attorney General Anthony Krastek was assigned to the case.

He sent the DNA stored in the fridge for investigation and found it to be an approximate match to Kevin's. His co-workers also confirmed that Kevin was constantly frustrated by John when he came in to work every morning and wished him dead every day.

The police could also trace the bloody footprints at the crime scene to Kevin when they found the prints matched a limited edition Asics shoes. The shoes were linked to Kevin, and it was found that the state trooper had purchased them in an online program for law enforcement officers.

It was later discovered that John's wife was obliged to a monthly spousal payment from her husband after their separation. Their divorce would have ripped her from this payment. John's death just a day before their divorce was highly suspicious. In addition, Michelle was also listed as a recipient of John's $1 million life insurance policy.

As told on Dateline, the police concluded that Kevin was influenced by his girlfriend to kill John because she would sow the seeds of hatred in his mind towards her ex-husband. The crime scene confirmed that it was a 'killing of passion' and Kevin had not planned on killing John.

But all the evidence pointed toward him, and he was finally convicted of the murder. According to NBC News, Kevin argued:

"I never made a threat with the intention of carrying it out...There isn't any joke. It's just my personality, my behavior (with co-workers)."

Kevin was found guilty of John's murder in March 2009 and was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for first-degree murder. He is currently held at State Correctional Institution – Mahanoy in Frackville, Pennsylvania.
