Dateline Season 26, Episode 13, titled Unspeakable, focused on the unfortunate death of Jaime Melgar and how his wife, Sandra Melgar, was convicted of the crime, though the evidence against her was mostly circumstantial.

Jaime Melgar was originally from Guatemala and immigrated to the U.S. when he was very young. He built his life in this country and worked as an IT specialist. Jaime was married to his high school sweetheart, Sandra, who was a nurse, and they had one daughter together, Lizz.
The couple had been married for 32 years, and after returning to their Houston home from dinner on December 22, 2012, they apparently became victims of a home invasion, which took Jaime’s life.
According to Sandra, they were in the jacuzzi once they got home, and Jaime went inside first to check on their barking dogs. She further mentioned that she stayed back, and after spending some more time in the jacuzzi, she finally went inside.

On December 23, 2012, Jaime’s brother, Herman Melgar, and other family members came to visit. However, upon knocking on the door, they got no response, leading Herman to enter the house through the open garage door. It was then that he heard someone crying and shouting.
Sandra was discovered inside the closet in their bedroom. She was tied and bruised, and the closet door was blocked by a chair placed in front of it. Jaime’s body was found in a different closet, and unfortunately, he had already lost his life by the time he was found.
He appeared to have been stabbed 31 times, and there were multiple wounds on his face, head, and the rest of his body. His brain, skull, and facial bones were severely injured, which ultimately led to his death. It was also evident that he and his attacker had fought before Jaime succumbed, as many of his wounds appeared to be defensive injuries.
The couple’s home was also in poor condition. Authorities found that many drawers were open and jewelry boxes had been tampered with, though there were no signs of forced entry.
The police eventually arrested Sandra as the murderer, though no solid physical evidence tied her to the crime scene. Her prosecution remains doubtful to this day, with her daughter still hopeful that new evidence will emerge to prove her mother’s innocence.
