Dateline: Unforgettable Season 2 Episode 44, titled The Sting, followed the case of Dalia Dippolito and her husband Mike Dippolito. The official synopsis of the episode reads:
“Newlywed Dalia Dippolito comes home from the gym to find out her husband has been killed; in a case Dennis Murphy will never forget, almost nothing is as it seems; he explores whether Dalia was a pawn in a hoax gone wrong or simply diabolical.”
The case was so shocking that reporter Dennis Murphy was compelled to say:
“She had everything she wanted, but she longed for one thing more, a hitman to take out her husband. I’ve seen a lot on Dateline, but this one pretty much takes the prize.”
Let us now explore in detail who Dalia and Mike Dippolito were and how Dalia, wanting Mike dead, had tried to hire a hitman to kill him and eventually got caught as presented in Dateline. Dalia was eventually convicted of solicitation of first-degree murder.
Dalia Dippolito planned to hire a hitman to kill her husband Mike as shown in Dateline
The first time that Dalia and Mike had met, they seemed to be smitten with each other instantly. Mike was married but he went through a quick divorce just so he could marry Dalia without wasting any more time. The couple’s life was going like a fairy tale until Dalia started planning to kill her husband.
Dalia was a former escort as said by Mike, though she had later denied being associated with that profession. After their marriage they spent six months happily but after that things took a rather sinister turn as Dalia chose a morning of August 2009 to be the last day of her husband.
That day, she had gone out for the gym and believed that when she came back, she would find her husband dead. What she did not know was that the police were already aware of her plans and she was going to walk into a trap when she received a call from the police asking her to come back home as a situation with her husband had taken place.
Dalia did come back to her house, pretending to know nothing. She also appeared to be shocked when she was informed that her husband was shot dead. She played along with them, saying her husband had enemies because of his business and certain financial debts. Never once did she mention anything about her marriage being bad or her resentment towards her husband.
Dalia was convicted of solicitation of first-degree murder
Finally, after putting her in handcuffs, it was revealed to her that the police already knew about her plan. All of this happened because Mohamed, Dalia’s friends with benefits, with whom she kept having a relationship even after her marriage, decided to inform the police about her intentions as she discussed them with him.
Dalia had told Mohamed that she wanted her husband dead and for the purpose she would like to get in touch with a hitman. Mohamed could not accept this and went straight to the police to inform them of the same. The law enforcement officials then convinced Mohamed to meet Dalia with hidden cameras and record everything she said about her plan to get Mike killed.
A few days after this, Dalia met with the hitman Mohamed arranged, who was actually an undercover cop. She told him what she wanted and was absolutely certain of her desire to get her husband murdered. Everything she said was recorded as the cop was also wearing recording devices under his clothes.
This information was finally given to Dalia in the interrogation room after she was in handcuffs. Mike was also brought in front of her, which made her gasp with shock. After two failed trails, Dalia was given a 16 years prison sentence on her third trial.
