As per the investigative series Dateline, the crime took place in Belgium in October 2015 where Craig and Johanna were living while he was stationed at a NATO command. Here are the 5 harrowing details of the case:

1) Neighbors heard Hannah scream before she fell

Hannah already moved out to her new apartment and on the night of October 8, 2015, she visited Craig in their old apartment around 9 p.m. after which the neighbors heard her scream before she fell off the seventh-floor apartment window. According to Craig's statement, Hannah was an alcoholic therefore initially police considered it a suicide. Craig also said she consumed wine when she jumped out of the window but later the autopsy traced no alcohol in her system.

2) The autopsy revealed a morphine-based painkiller and a high dose of sedatives

Hannah was also struggling with mental health therefore her relatives and friends were further questioned to dig deep into the reason behind her attempting suicide. However, autopsy reports came as a turning point in the course of direction. The autopsy ruled out the consumption of any alcohol, instead, it revealed a morphine-based painkiller along with a high dose of sedatives in Hannah's body. This suggests that she had been drugged before her fall.

3) The investigation uncovered a history of domestic abuse

In 2013 Hannah had accused Craig of strangling her. Further, her family and friends confirmed that even after the complaint the abuse continued. The investigation also revealed that Hannah had an affair that raised tension in her marriage.

4) Raising suspicion over Craig

Craig was acting a lot calmer after Hannah's fall. John Hove, Hannah's father also personally investigated and found scratch marks on the roof near the window suggesting Hannah's struggle to save herself. The prosecutors noted some weird stress on Craig's face.

5) The Arrest of Craig, Hannah's husband

In 2022, the case was reopened with substantial evidence against Craig, Hannah's husband. The case was eventually taken over by the U.S. Navy, and after years of legal battles, Craig Becker was convicted of premeditated murder in 2022. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole and was dismissed from the Navy. The verdict came out on Hannah's birthday serving justice to the victim.
