Here's everything that we know about the homicide case as presented on the Dateline episode.
Dateline: What happened to Tom Kolman?
Immediately after the discovery of Tom's body inside his sedan, the police settled upon this being a case of homicide and set forth upon investigating. According to A&E True Crime, the case sent shockwaves across the idyllic New York suburb of Kingston and also caught the attention of James Nani, a journalist who covered the case extensively:
"As soon as I stumbled on the case, I thought it was unusual, and the circumstances about it were very odd, you had three people from the suburbs in an alleged love triangle that had these weird details like (Nunez) pretending to be in the CIA. I think that captured people’s attention,” Nani told the outlet.
During the police investigation, it was revealed that Tom's dear friend, Gilberto Nunez, a New York-based dentist, was the prime suspect. Tom's wife, Linda, confessed to having an almost year-long affair with Nunez, and she also mentioned that Nunez had claimed to have worked for the CIA in the past.
Tom and Linda knew Nunez through their children, who attended the same karate classes together. While Linda and Nunez were involved in their affair, Linda mentioned receiving strange text messages from someone who claimed to be having s*xual relations with Nunez. She also received emails from someone who claimed to be Nunez's mother, encouraging her to divorce Tom.
It was finally revealed that Nunez himself had a burner phone, which he used to text Linda. He tried various ways to have her break up with Tom, and when everything else failed, he resorted to killing Tom by mixing the sedative Midazolam in Tom's coffee. Tom, who already suffered from sleep apnea, succumbed to the effects of the sedative quite easily.
Dateline: Gilberto Nunez's conviction and recent whereabouts
As the trial went on, Nunez's defense attorneys tried their best to establish that Nunez was innocent and that Tom had died of natural causes, as his heart was bound to shut down at any moment.
The jury initially acquitted him of the murder charges on June 17, 2016, but he was convicted on the felony counts owing to his forgery of CIA documents. He was then sentenced to two and a third to seven years in a state prison in February 2017 by an Ulster County judge. His current whereabouts are unknown.
