As per Dateline, the 43-year-old Camilo Salazar was born and raised in Cuba and later moved to Florida. He graduated from Florida International University and later helped his father, Eduardo Salazar, a real estate agent who founded Silver Leaf Designs. Other than that, Camilo also worked in multiple other ventures and was involved in activities surrounding his local parish, St. Stephen’s.

Camilo married Daisy Holcombe and lived with her and their two daughters in the serene community of the Coconut Grove area of Miami, Florida. The family was living a peaceful life until the horrific events of June 1, 2011, which shattered them.

While doing his usual activity of dropping off his three-week-old infant daughter at his wife’s office at 2801 SW 31st Ave, Salazar realized that his daughter’s pacifier was missing. As he went to get it back, he never returned. After no news of Salazar’s whereabouts emerged, his family began worrying and later realized that his Chevrolet TrailBlazer was parked at the same place with the driver’s window down.

Camilo’s wife Daisy told Dateline:

"They started, you know, sort of backtracking, and then they realized, wait a minute, his car’s right there, it never, it never left."

As per Dateline, this led them to believe that Salazar might be in danger, and they informed the police. After nearly an eight-hour search and going through numerous surveillance videos surrounding the area, the police were still not able to find anything. Later, on June 2, 2011, they received a report about a burning body near Okeechobee Road and Northwest 138th Avenue.

The body was sent for examination, and later, the medical examiner revealed that it was Camilo Salazar’s. The examination also revealed that Camilo was brutally tortured and later killed.

It didn’t take much time for the police to look into Camilo’s personal life and find out about his affair with Jenny Marin, an old acquaintance. Jenny and Camilo had known each other since the early 2000s when she came to live in Florida from New Jersey. They reconnected again and began a secret affair.

After interrogating Jenny, the police found out that her husband, Manuel Marin, was also not at home. It was later discovered that Marin had left the country and was now out of reach of the Miami police. However, by tracking his phone activity, they were able to get a hold of three more accomplices who might be linked to Camilo’s murder.

As per Dateline, one of the three men, Ariel Gandulla, a former MMA fighter, was nabbed by the police. He cooperated and unraveled the details about how they kidnapped and killed Camilo.

According to the Miami Herald, Ariel and another man named Roberto Isaac kidnapped Salazar. Later, Marin and Isaac took him to a field in West Miami-Dade, where they ended up torturing, killing, and then burning Salazar’s body.

According to reports, Marin fled to Spain after committing the horrendous crime. His other three accomplices, namely Ariel Gandulla, Roberto Isaac, and Alexis Vila Perdomo, were found guilty by a jury in a 2019 trial.

Vila was convicted of participating in the conspiracy to kill Salazar and faced imprisonment for up to 30 years, while Isaac was found guilty of participating in the kidnapping, torture, and murder of Camilo, resulting in a life imprisonment sentence.

The case was finally closed after Marin's conviction in May 2023, when he was found guilty by a jury of conspiring to kidnap Salazar. He received a 15-year imprisonment for that charge. His other sentences included 30 years for murder and a life sentence for kidnapping Camilo Salazar.
