Dateline: 5 details about Sante and Kenny Kimes' notorious crimes
1) Who are Sante and Kenny Kimes?
Sante and Kenny Kimes are a mother-son grifter duo who were wanted for a series of crimes they committed in different parts of the country.
They murdered a Los Angeles businessman named David Kazdin and committed various crimes of theft and arson in Las Vegas and the Bahamas. Sante involved Kenny in all her crimes until it was too late for the 23-year-old to get out.
2) Who was Kimes' latest victim that led to their conviction?
After committing crimes nationwide, the duo finally rented an apartment in Manhattan's Upper East Side from Irene Silverman.
Irene was a widow who lived in a multi-million-dollar townhouse when she suddenly disappeared in 1998. It was later discovered that Silverman's tenants were none other than the wanted criminal Kimes, who had also disappeared a few weeks before Silverman's disappearance.
The two were finally arrested for Silverman's murder in the 2000's.
3) What happened to Sante Kimes after her arrest?
Sante Kimes was arrested for Silverman's murder with her son. In addition, the duo was also convicted on 118 charges, including two murders, robbery, forgery, and slavery.
After their arrest, Kenny made a plea deal and agreed to testify against his mother, which saved both of them from a death sentence.
Detective Bill Cox called her "the most evil woman" in the Dateline episode.
Sante died at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women on May 19, 2014, while she was serving for her first murder charge.
4) What has Kenny said about his crimes on the Dateline episode?
Kenny is currently serving his sentence at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in California, and he appears in the Dateline episode for an interview with Morrison.
He felt guilty of his past crimes:
“I absolutely regret my past and the ignorance of my past crimes makes we want to do better and engage in what I would call tangible contrition...I am sorry. I was an idiot and my ignorance I am ashamed of.”
5) Sante's other son and Kenny's half-brother also appeared in the Dateline episode
Kent Walker, Sante's other son, also appeared in the episode and talked about the influence his mother had on others. He revealed that Kenny was pulled into the world of their mother's crimes and had no way out.
Morrison called the Kimes' story as the most unusual one:
“It remains so {unusual}veven today. People are still talking about it. Also, the fact that [Kenny] was prepared to talk gave us the chance to once again tell one of the most remarkable stories ever.”
