Dateline: The Capture - Who is Amanda Lindhout and what happened to her? Details explored

As per Dateline, a Canadian woman, Amanda Lindhout, was captured in August 2008 while working as a freelance journalist in Mogadishu. The brutal crime happened in August 2008 when a group of Somali men took her hostage. As per CBC, Lindhout’s hands and feet were tied behind her back for three days.
Lindhout was in captivity for more than a year: for 460 days. In that time, she was brutally beaten, tortured, and even s*xually assaulted by the men. Amanda's mother, Lorinda Stewart, was then contacted by one of her kidnappers, asking for ransom.
The ransom money that they initially asked for was around $3 million. It was her mother’s efforts that ultimately saved Amanda’s life, and she was able to come back to her family in Canada in 2009. She told Dateline:
"I would not be here now if it was not for my mother. My mom gave me life and she saved my life."
However, her past still came back to haunt her when she received a Facebook message from her captor, Adam/Ader. She told Dateline how the message from Adam, which was just a simple ‘Hello,’ scared her. She said:
"It was so scary that he could find me, even though I was safe and across the world and was at home."
Later, Lindhout contacted the Canadian police, who investigated the case by going undercover and luring him in. They initially posed as the Lindhouts’ media consultant and began an undercover investigation that went on for more than five years, before he was captured by the police.
Dateline: The Capture - Ali Omar Ader was sent to jail for his participation in the heinous crime

While talking to an investigator who pretended to be a media consultant, Ader revealed that he wanted to become a writer by writing a book about Somalia. The investigators then tried to lure him by telling him that they could help him write and release his book. To talk about a fake book deal, he was called to meet them in Mauritius.
As per Dateline, the undercover investigator asked him to sign the contract for the book deal, for which he had to reveal everything about his past due to a special clause in the contract. Ader had to reveal everything, and the investigator got his confession about kidnapping Amanda. However, due to being in a different country where recording his confession was not allowed, they could not arrest him based on it and had to make another plan.
He was then called to meet in Ottawa, Canada, for his fake book deal. That’s when Ader’s confession was recorded in a hotel room in Ottawa with hidden cameras. In 2015, Ader was then arrested for being a part of the kidnapping of Amanda Lindhout.
As per Dateline, Ali Omar Ader was sentenced to jail in 2018 and is supposed to spend 15 years in a Canadian prison for his crimes.
