Bill Stout was a prominent member of the Darby community. A craftsman and perfectionist in his work, he gained a reputation as a diligent and dependable man. He was married to Anne Marie Stout, and they had two sons. On the surface, Bill and Anne Marie lived like a normal family, sharing the simple pleasures of their small town community.

Friends and neighbors told one another that Bill was very friendly, reliable, and dedicated to family. But all this was just outside; underneath, tension and conflict brewed. His marriage to Anne Marie was crumbling as they passed through mistrust and resentment in their union.

The tragic incident and investigation

Returning from shopping with her youngest son on June 10, 2007, Anne Marie Stout made an awful discovery. Bill Stout was dead in their bedroom, shot in the head with a single bullet. A suicide was presumed at first. Soon, however, contradictions between Anne Marie's account and the physical evidence cast doubt on that theory.

As the investigation progressed, the authorities learned that Bill had reported the handgun missing only ten days before his demise. Strangely, the gun was later found hidden in Bill's motorcycle saddlebag. Even more suspicious was the presence of a rubber glove containing Anne Marie's DNA and gunshot residue in the same bag.

Additionally, investigators found alarming evidence connecting Anne Marie to a false case against another woman. With a sequence of fabricated emails, Anne Marie posed as a woman named Barbara Miller. She accused Miller of threats and harassment. The true story was that this affair was between Bill and Miller and that she was carrying his child. Anne Marie's hoax began to collapse once the evidence began to pile up against her.

The trial and verdict

Anne Marie Stout was charged with the murder of her husband in 2008. Prosecutors built a compelling case proving that Anne Marie had systematically planned her husband's murder. Her false claims of harassment and the planted evidence only went to show her attempts to manipulate the investigation.

Forensic experts at the trial presented the testimony about gunshot residue and DNA on the rubber glove that directly pointed to Anne Marie. Due consideration was also given to the staged crime scene by the prosecution, suggesting that Anne Marie had attempted to mislead authorities into thinking that Bill's death was a suicide.

The jury held Anne Marie Stout guilty of deliberate homicide after three weeks of trial. She was sentenced to a life term in prison with no eligibility for parole. The Montana Supreme Court dismissed her appeal in 2010, thereby reaffirming the conviction.

One comes to remember the sorrowful demise of Bill Stout as an indictment of how treachery and desperation can lead to dire consequences. The Dateline episode "The Box" outlines in detail the investigations and subsequent trial that revolved around this case.

Though justice prevailed, it failed to fill the void left behind by the death of Bill Stout, whose memory lived on in many people, including his family and the Darby community. He was a living epitome of the truth, and all those who try to fight for it in the face of heartache.
