Born on December 3, 1996, Halee Rathgeber suffered from a condition in her childhood that led to a coma. It was the reason, when she got better, she decided to be a nurse and take care of people. She attended the University of Southern Indiana as a nursing student after completing high school in 2015.

The Dateline episode showed how Halee was a loving and caring young woman who was working toward her goal of helping and taking care of people. She was already associated with the Veterans Administration and St. Mary’s Hospital. Her family described her as a warm and loving person.

The young woman was on the path of building a successful life for herself until fate intervened and changed everything.

On April 24, 2017, Halee’s lifeless body was found in the Alcoa Soccer Complex’s parking lot. A single gunshot wound on her head had taken her life.

While checking the crime scene, law enforcement officials found that none of Halee’s belongings — like her keys, wallet, and other essentials — were with her. They did not find any other forensic evidence and thus the investigation started off on the basis of interviews of people related to Halee and possible key witnesses.

After initially suspecting Thaddious Rice, who was associated with a murder investigation that involved Halee being questioned, the probe led the police to deduce that Isaiah Hagan, an acquaintances of Halee, could be the key suspect. Hagan had a reputation of stealing and borrowing, and he owed money to Halee, which probably led to a confrontation.

A common friend, Jake, confirmed that Hagan did meet Halee on the night she was killed. Moreover, police placed Hagan at the scene of the crime based on his phone records, and also found a towel at his place that had traces of Halee’s blood. This led to his arrest, though he pleaded not guilty during the trial.

After a mistrial, a second trial was conducted where Hagan’s mother came forward and testified that her son did confess to killing Halee, although by mistake.

Eventually, Hagan’s crime was proven and, besides murder, he was also charged for attempting to obstruct justice and robbery. He was sentenced to 60 years of prison time, in 2018.

Dateline can be streamed on Peacock.
