Deputy Mason Moore, 42 at the time of death, had been with law enforcement for 15 years and was serving with the Broadwater Sheriff County's Office. He was a married man with three children: twin sons and a daughter.
On May 16, 2017, Moore was on night duty, patrolling his vehicle before 2 am, and finally heading home. As seen on the footage of the gas station he passed, a white Chevy Suburban car was following him. The anti-law enforcement father-son duo was in the suburban, with Marshall behind the wheel.
At 2:28 AM, when Moore's car reached a dark stretch of highway of about 25 miles, the suburban overtook their car by overspeeding at 100 miles per hour.
Suddenly, shots were fired from the suburbs, attacking Moore's car's windshield, which also hit him in the head and his vehicle was suddenly stopped. The father-son duo continued to fire shots at Moore's car, which led to his death.
Moore was shot 19 times, after which Lloyd and Marshall fled the scene in their Chevy.

As told on Dateline, the Butte-Silver Bow Police spotted the Chevy overspeeding and chased them for about 150 miles, finally catching onto them in Missoula County.
While the Suburban continued firing shots, the police from other counties joined the scene, using stopsticks to destroy their tires. But when this failed to stop the perpetrators from falling, the scene escalated into a shootout, which led to the death of Marshall, who was fatally shot during the shootout with the Butte police.
As shown on Dateline, Sgt. Tyler Deeks of Anaconda Police made Lloyd's arrest, who was assisted by his son Marshall in murdering Deputy Moore. As per Tyler's statement during Lloyd's arrest, he said:
'‘We’re evil militia''...His demeanor, an overall calmness. To me that was not fully what I expected. I would expect him to be more angry or vocal; instead he was rather calm,”
Lloyd was finally convicted of Deputy Moore's murder in 2021, where the Butte jury found him guilty on charges of attempted deliberate homicide and a high-speed chase with the Butte police.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment for the killing of Deputy Mason Moore in 2017, without the possibility of parole.
After Moore's death, his wife Jodi created the Mason Moore Foundation in his memory.
