The latest episode of Dateline: Missing in America follows the suspicious disappearance of teenager Kit Mora. A Washington resident, Kit is non-binary and indigenous and has been missing from some time around April 2022. Despite all these years having passed, there is no concrete update from the law enforcement officials regarding where Kit Mora is now.
Kit’s older sister, Charlotte Reckard, naturally has the same question.
“I want to know what the hell happened,” Charlotte told Dateline. “I want to know where Kit is.”
Let us now explore in detail who Kit is and how the police handled their case.
Kit Mora is a non-binary indigenous teenager
Kit’s best friend Amythist McCart introduced Kit to Dateline as someone who
“didn’t have a mean bone in their body.”
They had been friends since kindergarten and Amythist further said,
“I never knew anyone like Kit.”
Kit’s older sister Charlotte also had similar opinions about them and told Dateline,
“You could never be mad at Kit. They’re very smiley, very happy.”
She added,
“Art was one of their main hobbies. Other hobbies were writing, reading. They really liked ‘How To Train Your Dragon.”
However, Kit also had some struggles with mental health. Charlotte said,
“They struggled with mental health, but I think most teenagers do. A lot of the mental health struggles that Kit had, I had experienced similar, so we were very close in that aspect. We kind of just knew that we could lean on each other.”
Amythist mentioned that Kit had told her that their childhood was rather complicated. However, once they were adopted by their father’s side's grandparents Bonnie and Charlie Groo, things became easier for them.
Things changed drastically after Kit moved back to Omak
While things were going quite well for Kit, on April 29, 2021 they received the tragic news of one of their brothers passing away. This made them reconnect with their mother, and eventually they decided to go visit their mother at Omak, which was some three hours' drive away from Yakima.
Kit’s family at Yakima thought it was fine as they believed they would be back soon after the visit. However, Kit ended up staying back at Omak and even enrolled in school there. Their connection with both Amythist and Charlotte began to dwindle and after a while they got completely out of touch.
From the time Kit went back to Omak, they only opened up about their struggles there once, as they texted Amythist mentioning how they were burdened with too many responsibilities there. Their friend encouraged them to come back to Yakima but Kit said that it would not be possible for them to do that because of how much work they had there.
As the communication from Kit’s side stopped completely after a point, their family and best friend back at Yakima realized something had to be wrong. As per a report published by NBC News on April 23, 2025, they asked help from Omak police on November 27, 2021, asking for a wellness check on Kit. The results of this check came back positive as Charlotte told Dateline,
“They said that Kit was fine.”
However, in September 2022, when Charlotte asked Amythist if she had heard anything from Kit, she told her they had been out of touch for almost a year. This led to Charlotte panicking, and Amythist decided that they must visit Omak on their own to check on Kit.
Amythist then went to Omak with her grandmother and when the police returned with some information on Kit, their words shocked her. Amythist told Dateline,
“They tell me that apparently Kit had been missing since April. The blood rushed to my face. I started crying instantly.”
She added,
“They’re like, ‘Well, their mom said that they ran away with some girlfriend back to Yakima.”
Kit’s mother, however, remained unavailable for comments. Amythist then passed this information to Charlotte and together they started to gather more information of Kit’s whereabouts.
Further, as per the NBC report, Charlotte is "positive" that Kit would have gone missing in late 2021. Charlotte said,
“I don’t know if it was fall or winter, but I know that it was long before April of 2022.”
However, despite all their attempts, Kit remains missing to this day. Their family has offered a reward of $10,000 for anyone who will provide information regarding Kit, which can help them find them or in the worst case, their body or remains.
