1) Aisling initially claimed self-defense

Both Aisling and her mother Kelly pleaded that she had shot Shane acting purely out of self-defense as otherwise the latter would have harmed them. Aisling was arrested but let out shortly on bond. It was during this time that she went on to act in an Oregon-based film that involved her character once again pulling a trigger. While her performance was generally praised by everyone in the film's crew, they were horrified after eventually learning about her real identity.

2) Aisling had a troubled childhood

Aisling had a troubled childhood as per Dateline. Her growing-up years were often marred by the relentless bickering and feuds between her mother Kelly and her father Daniel Reed. Following their tumultuous divorce in 2000, Aisling and her two siblings started living with Kelly. Despite being an attorney herself, Kelly chose to stay at home and she and Aisling eventually became dependent on Kelly's mother Lore Moore.

3) Kelly was locked in property disputes

Lore had set Kelly's family up in a Victorian house in Ashlan, Orgon. She would also keep taking out loans mortgaging her huge ranch and estate. This soon proved to be a bone of contention between Kelly and her brother Shane, as the latter was apprehensive of his share in the inheritance being diminished on account of the magnitude of loans drawn based on the property.

4) Shane was charged with assault

Nine months before his death, Shane was charged with assault after he allegedly threw an oil can at Aisling. By July 26, 2016. Kelly and Aisling wanted Lore to amend her will to include the condition that Shane would inherit nothing if something were to happen to Kelly and her family. Shane, on the other hand, wanted his mother to sign away the property equally to him and Kelly.

5) Aisling was eventually charged with murder

Shane had called a notary Carla Tryber to their ranch to oversee the signing of the property papers. On the day in question, as per Aisling and Kelly's statements, Shane tried to storm into the room where Lore, Kelly, and Aisling were present. Aisling picked up a nearby lying gun and shot at him, thus killing him.

Although Aisling was initially arrested and bonded out, Jackson County Sheriff's Detective Gabe Burchfiel had told Dateline:

"She seemed very dramatic, When looking at her, she seemed emotional. She would — she’s sitting in a chair — she’d pull her knees up to her chest and put her head between her knees and do different things like that. But when she wanted to say something, it didn’t seem like she was upset.”

Eventually, the police discovered a video recording that proved Shane's murder by Aisling was rather premeditated and not done purely out of self-defense. The charge against Aisling was upgraded to murder. She then pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree manslaughter and has been in prison for six years and three months.
